PRONI hold the biggest collection of records for N.Ireland, but the church records are not online, they will do a search for you for a fee, this is the link to search service

maura

i put in a search enquiry through ulster historical foundation for info on charles fergie 1812-1882
they emailed me back to say that as i didnt know his denomination and place of birth that it would be impossible to do.

do you have any other tips that may help me please?

i know that charles fergie's occ was bottler from his son johns wedding details, also says thats johns fathers townland was belfast.
denomination on john's baptism deatils show his father charles fergie's denomination was church of ireland......
johns denomination further along is down as presbyterian..

you suggested that i start looking for them in church records at proni......
i dont know how proni works but im assuming the records i want are not online would this mean either visiting personally or paying someone at proni to search for me??

i live in england and would like to go to proni myself but it wont be possible for me to do so until early next year due to family commitments.

thanks, kirstie

Death certs for that period only give the

Name
date of death
age
cause of death
address
informant

John may have been out of the country in 1901, so you could try checking the England, Wales & Scotland census for 1901. I think their surname has been mispelt alot as I can't even find them on the Griffith Valuation, Fergie not a common name in Ireland there only 41 in the 1901 & 53 in the 1911 census. PRONI probably your best place to start looking for them in church records.

forgot to add to the above post......

how easy is it to find out where a person was if they were not on the 1901 census?

thanks maura :0)

i was thinking of paying a researcher in ireland to find out more info on the charles fergie and eliza sloan that were john lepper fergie's parents as i cant find anything relating to them other than the deaths on earlier post, (if that is infact them which theres a very strong poss it is) but before i do have you any ideas where i can find more info on them please??

also thinking of sending off for death certs, but do you know what info they may hold?

thanks, kirstie

Kirstie, Lorton street was mistranscribed wrong in 1901 census, there is no Lortoy street. The 1901 & 1911 censuses where only transcribed recently and there is mistakes in them. As for the street directories some of them are only copies of the previous year. My great grandfather is in 2 different streets according to LW & the census, the census 1 is right.

kirstie Report 21 Apr 2011 00:20

i had a check again and im slighlty confused!!

the lwylie site street directory for 1901 has charles fergie carpenter at 6 lorton street..... i know he's not on the 1901 census but i supose it would depend on if the street directory was done before or after census...

i had a check on proni and they have john l fergie linenlapper at 5 lorton street in 1880 and looking at the image it looks like either the original has been scanned or a photo copy of the original scanned on.
i could find no lortoy street on there either.

as they are 2 diff sites and 20 years between the dates of lorton street im confused as to when it was mistrancribed.....

to confuse me even more the national archives of ireland has lortoy street in 1901 and no lorton street and in 1911 it has a lorton street and no lortoy street!!

could you help me on that please??

thanks, kirstie

There loads of reason why people were not in the census, if they were in the out of the country. If they were in the Army or R.I.C.,or Jail, or in a hospital etc., they would be down under their intials. Plus there is some parts of streets missing from the 1901 & 1911 census, plus names have been mistranscribe or part of the census could of been damaged.

kirstie Report 19 Apr 2011 00:17

aswell as the charles fergie you found i have found a chas fergie carpenter at 9 bromley street in 1900 on proni

this is most likely charles fergie my g grandfather 1874 as he was a carpenter.
i couldnt find him anywhere on the 1901 census for some reason,
his wife and children are though, she is down at 134 tenent street with 3 children, staying with her father and siblings and nephew....
bromley street was a home address for them..... perhaps?
they do appear together on the 1911 census. and with 2 more children... so this tells me they were still together.

without meaning to sound silly.......apart from the obvious do you know of any reasons why people would not be on the census??

thanks, kirstie
