Find Ancestors

Hi, can anyone please help me, im trying to locate my paternal grandmother and her family, i have her traced back to 1901 but there is not a single listing for her family before that. My grandmother was Ada Payton 1898 - 1992 she was born in eiher clerkenwell or london st hornsey, she married walter t thompson in 1918, her father and mother were alfred and louisa payton and i believe her mother louisa was married before as the 1901 cencus shows a charles finch as stepbrother to ada, i have a faint memory of my father saying his mum (ada) had irish ancestry but i could be wrong there, it just seems strange i cant find anything for the paytons, please could anyone help, or know this family or maybe point me in a direction i havent yet tried, many many thanks in anticipation, Heather
