Hi there, a couple of weeks ago I asked for help in trying to find parents $ sibblings of Martha Mary Walkley, we came to a stand still. I now have her birth cert, she was born 18 July 1887 Village CulmstockWellington, Somerset, Devon. Mother is listed as Mary Ann Walkley - village Culmstock. There is no father named. I think I found mother - Mary Ann Walkley on the 1881 UK census age 14 born 1867 Culmstock, Devon, living in that area and working as a domestic servant living with William Coles age 56 occup farmer. Other people - Lydia Coles 56, Mary Coles 25, Thomas Coles 20. Thats all I have been able to find, I cant find Mary on 1871census or any other, not even with her daughter. ( Daughter ended up living in Wales she married William John Skyrme 40 yrs after living together. Can someone please help sort this out for me I would be greatful

Just adding my two-penneth.

If no father was mentioned on her marriage certificate and she can't be traced on any census I would hazard a guess that her mother married before the 1891 census and Martha is using her stepfathers surname....... so seeing as Walkley isn't a common name I would look at all the female marriages from 1887 to March 1891 and see if Martha turns up using a different name???

A piece of information from previous next door neighbours.

John Robert was John to his wife and Robert to his family. Quite common apparently in some places in Wales for the child to be called by the middle name. Perhaps the same with Martha Mary and Edgar J.

P.S. The 1891 census I found is probably the wrong one, but it can be checked and crossed off the list.

As far as the births of the children go you have George and Douglas and the Edgar birth that Pam mentioned was actually Edgar J. so perhaps Jack was his middle name and he was known by that.

how sure are you that the birth found in Wellington reg distict is your Martha . Did her death cert give a birth date ? Death certs did after c1970.

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 9 Jun 2011 11:00

I'm not saying the 1891 census you found Pam is definitely wrong. Just that it gives the birthplace as Monmouthshire so the birth I found could be the Martha from that family.

I really think Julie Ann needs the birth certificate for Martha's parents names.

Julie Ann - are you certain that "your" Martha Mary was born in the Wellington registration district? Since she married in Glamorganshire could she have been born in Wales too?

Pity the 1891 census is the wrong one will keep looking. Her fathers name would help.

I think the 1891 census family found by Pam may be connected to this birth (so not your Martha Mary):-

Name: WAKELEY, Martha Mary
Registration District: Bedwellty
County: Monmouthshire
Year of Registration: 1886
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
Mother's Maiden Name: Not available before 1911 Q3
