Find Ancestors

Hi there

I'am looking for more information for Robert OSWELL (born circa 1832). I would like to find out exactly when & where he was born, who his parents were and where they were born, and why that I cannot find him in the 1841 and 1851 censuses.

What I have for him so far is this:

Copy of Marriage Certificate which has the following:

Married: 22 April 1855 - Aged 23 - Father: John OSWELL (deceased)
Wife: Mary SIMPSON - Aged 30 - Father: John SIMPSON (deceased)
Married at The Parish Church, Kendal, Westmorland

1861 Census has:

Robert Oswell - Age: 29 - Occupation: Boot Maker - Where born? Orton, Westmorland.
Wife: Mary Oswell - Age: 35 - Where born? ??, Cumberland
Plus 3 children: John S Oswell
Robert Oswell
Joseph Oswell

Death Registration Oct/Nov/Dec 1868 has

Oswell, Robert aged 35 - Kendal (his wife Mary died in 1867)

I have e-mailed Kendal Records Office with all the above information, but they had no more than I did.

Any help from anyone would be much appreciated :-)

This is a long shot but I wonder if this is him in 1841 census? It is the only one I can find that could be a match???

Apart from this, there is every possibility that the father stated on his marriage certificate could be made up to conceal the fact that his mother was not married???

It's possible as I don't know his mother's name - never though to search that way.

It does look like the Agnes and Joseph from the 1841 census??

Still could be a possibility for Robert. Agnes could be a relation to John and Mary?

Again, possible - The marriage cert from 1855 does show that John Oswell's (deceased) occupation as "labourer"

In that case, I would suggest not :-)

It is not looking good - I wonder if this is John in 1861 which would mean that it can't be him if he was deceased in 1855???????

Marriage Cert in 1855 is quite specific that John Oswell (Deceased).

I think you first post is the best shot as Robert's son, John Simpson Oswell, shows in a later census as being from Strickland Gate.

If anyone else can help out or suggest about where or who I could possibly contact with regard to finding out Robert Oswell's exact D.O.B, and exactly where he was born, with exception of Kendal Records Office, It would be much appreciated :-)

It could just be that he was in Scotland during 1841 and 51 censuses.

both Kendal and Penrith have main roads called Stricklandgate (The reference to gate is old English which means road).

Not much help but cannot find anything like the name in Orton

Accordind tofreeebmd an Agnes Oswell dies in 1844 and I cannot find her either
