Estelle Report 28 Jul 2011 09:02

My grandfather went to New Zealand where he was confirmed in the All Saints Church, Taradale, Napier in 1921. He was about 19 years old. Not too sure about the Salvation Army.

Sorry to confuse you all. My first time at this. Thank you Aileen for finding the death record for my gr grandfather, Charles Arthur Oakley. I just assumed he ma y have died at sea as he joined the Merchant Service, so I am thrilled to bits. I will also look into the possible burial in Qld for the Charles Oakley now. Kate Wright was my grandfather's Aunt and the sister of my gr grandfather Charles A Oakley (stoker). All my Oakley forebears lived in and around Enfield, Middlesex. The only info I have about my grandfather is that after the marriage fell apart he was seen boarding the train to the Eastern States from Kalgoorlie and have searched a lot for him but everything that you have since found for me is truly appreciated. Any chance your grandfather was in the Salvation Army?

Good work, Aileen, it makes sense now.

Now we just need Estelle to come back and see it!

Aileen

Aileen Report 26 Jul 2011 18:49

No Kate was Charles sister she was an Oakley. The Oakley family came from Enfield. Estelle mentions that Charles junior went to live with his aunt Kate and there is the 1911 census record showing that

Gee Report 26 Jul 2011 18:17

Sorry Aileen, I think I was having a blonde moment!

I dont get why Kate was born in Enfield and her sister(?) was born in Scotland...Im presuming it's her sister?

Marriages Dec 1893

Oakley Katie Greenwich 1d 1615
Wright Alexander Greenwich 1d 1615

Should Katie be a 'Hazel' ......its been a long day, maybe I should just leave this at the moment!

Aileen

Aileen Report 26 Jul 2011 11:55

Estelle and Aileen are not the same person.....and yes I do use Scotland's People.

Yes Katie was born in Enfield as was her brother Charles senior.

Gee

Gee Report 26 Jul 2011 09:57

I think so reading the posts from Estelle and Aileen but I may be wrong! Maybe Aileen has looked as SP and has more info...think I am mistaken

I would guess Kate Wright was Charles A Oakley' aunt, his mothers sister?

But she was born in Enfield?

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 26 Jul 2011 09:50

Is Estelle and Aileen the same person?

Who is Katie Wright?

Gee

Gee Report 25 Jul 2011 18:55

Hi Estelle please post your comments on here and then we can all help x

Thank you for all your help. My grandfather could have changed his name as he left my grandmother with two small children to support. I have looked at a lot of electoral rolls here in Aust. He could have gone back to England or back to N.Z.

I thought Cherilyn had sorted this?

And it is confusing, you using two board names

Aileen

Aileen Report 25 Jul 2011 12:56

Found the death of Charles senior.....middle name was wrong but also viewed the Probate record which confirmed it was him....he left what little he had to Kate Wright

Estelle
Note the remarriage in WA is not him, as per my earlier post
Did you see the possible burial in Qld?

Aileen

Aileen Report 25 Jul 2011 11:07

Regarding the link to Hazels of Caithness.....the information on the parents of Charles senior may not be correct although they are what is given on his marriage cert to Jane Fry.....parents appear to have actually been William Henry Oakley and Maria Skerratt....the family were from Enfield Middlesex

Gee Report 25 Jul 2011 07:55

Thank you for your research. I am not sure if he did re-marry, he probably did though. His parents were Charles Arthur Oakley and Harriet Rachel (nee Hazel). She died in Perth Scotland in 1906.
My grandfather was taken to England in 1911 to live with his aunt kate and uncle. Once again thank you. I may just find him with all this help.
Estelle

Burial at Mt Gravatt Cemetery, Qld.

Oakley Charles 06 / 06 / 1967 65 years

Seems to be with others who died on same day of various ages and surnames, but all over 64.

Age fits????

Or Qld?

The Courier-Mail, Saturday 26 February 1938
Found Drunk In Charge of Truck
Charles Oakley, 36, relief worker, was fined £5, in default 21 days' imprisonment, when he pleaded guilty In the Police Court yesterday to having been found under the influence of liquor while in charge of a motor truck at Musgrave Road, Red Hill.

Maybe someone can check electoral rolls for you?
