Susan,
I started what I thought might be a near impossible task putting my FH together - no family alive on either side to ask & an only child from the relevant marriage. I started with my own full birth certificate & then approached the local outlet of the Dept. of Internal Affairs here in NZ. They were so helpful & with their support & encouragement off I went. The city library supplies excellent resources & when I felt more confident I joined up with GR.

The help column, closely followed by Hot Matches & some wonderful fellow searchers have me well on my way.

Remember however to read everything you can get your hands on related to the social history of each new forebear & the whole journey becomes alive. I'm underway with my husband's family using the same approach & it really works!

All the best of luck Susan

Lois :-)

"the irish conection is via robert basely's farther he was from ireland originaly but came over via goverment relocation he had a new last name given to him and goverment pension and lived off that till he died"

so Baseley is the 'new' name?

but have to say it sounds very unlikely, certainly if we're talking about the early 1800s?

Both Robert Baseley and wife Ruth nee Potts, and Robert's father also Robert Baseley c1840 Birmingham, and grandfather Thomas Baseley c1806 Warwickshire seem to trace back to English roots.

I'm giving up too - want my supper! Dea's going to be disappointed in the morning!

Can't see anything relating to Ireland in the pension records, but may have missed it because I'm not good at reading the handwriting.

Was just going to say I'm taking a break for the evening on this one. It's so darned hot here-my glasses keep fogging up and sliding down my nose. Can't see a thing!

Good find!

5ft 7 1/2 in Blue eyes, brown hair, fresh complexion, 127 lb, a miner.

Finding it hard to read the writing. Wonder if he served in Ireland at all, and whether that might be the root of the family story.

It confirms that his father was also Robert, and it also confirms the marriage to Ruth Potts, 25/10/1908 St Luke's Church, Cannock

Also children

Alice Mary 20.8.09

Thomas 15.10.10

Ruth 25.10.14

Robert 9.8.13

Ellen 11.1.18

I'm not seeing a likely marriage for David and Jane other than the one Ginny found in Cannock, but this looks like it could be the first son:

This may have been years ago but you need to think, this is an open board and people anywhere in the world can see this info just by searching a name
