Doreen Report 4 Aug 2011 18:22

Hello Everyone, I have looked at the 1871 census and it does look like our Samuel and Ellen's family, thank you Dea, as you say the image is abysmal, have been on it for hours trying to adjust the image, of course I am a dummy where the computer is concerned. It is a shock to find there are 2 more children, I can't make out the youngest daughter's name at all. Nor the visitor, who is listed as a scholar and the surname could be something like Furniss. I read it that she was 10 years old. But it looks like Fergus is right. I found a record in the births records for 1868 Jan-Feb-March for Fergus Hudson but not sure where to go from there, the screen keeps freezing up, probably I am overusing the searches. Am now in the middle of the searches of deaths for Fergus Hudson. Samuel died in 1872 and Ellen certainly never had them with her when she married John Mirfin in 1876. They may have gone to Samuel's family. The name Fergus sounds rather Scottish. If I could trace Samuel's Father, Joseph Hudson, it would maybe help to trace the two younger children. So that is 2 more that have done the disappearing act. Jax thank you for the info on the 1887 marriages, if Eliza switched her name round from Eliza Ann to Ann to Anne Eliza then we have been going thru a few wild goose chases. I am so slow at all this I shall probably be up to the early hours chasing these leads you have all been so kind to take the trouble to help me and I do appreciate it. Will come back with anything that makes sense. Would be so wonderful if we found Eliza.

Hello everyone, I sent a post earlier but it seems to have disappeared.T recap - Have been looking at the 1871 census, thank you Dea, looks very much like you found Ellen & Samuel, the census image is almost impossible to see but I have found Fergus in the Ecclesall Bierlow birth records for 1868, just need to see the actual record to make sure if he is Ellen and Samuel's. Am going through the death records now to see if he died as Ellen certainly didn't have the two younger children with them when she was living with John Mirfin in 1881. Also many thanks Jax for the marriage info, will search that too, but the screen keeps freezing up on me, maybe I am overusing the searches or am doing something wrong, am such a dummy on the computer. I do appreciate all the trouble you are all taking on my behalf. Will get back with anything I can dig up. Will be so wonderful if we can find Eliza.

Hello everyone, I am so stupid I didn't notice there was a page 2 on the posts, sorry about that. Dea you have opened up all these new leads, thank you so much and now I can stop looking at the deaths records and find the connection with the Burgins. It's strange that William was married to Eliza Ann but the age is wrong for our Eliza. But we do now know that William was Fergus's Uncle, that could turn up some important links. It was such a shock to find that Ellen had 2 more children and left them for others to care for but maybe she couldn't cope after Samuel died. When I come back home this afternoon I will get digging and post up any results. Very grateful for all you have done.

Doreen Report 5 Aug 2011 21:41

Hello Dea, Have been trying to get a tie in with Ann, Joseph's wife. Found a marriage record on ~Genes for an Ann Gillott in 1837 married in Sheffield Jul/Aug/Sept qtr. which would be about right according to Ann's age on the 1841 census you found. All there was is a number 22.307. No spouse's name. I am not very good at this. Same with the death record, I guess she died around 1849 as her last child was 2yrs old on the 1851 census when Joseph was listed as a widower. I found an Ann Hudson, Jan/Feb/Mar Qtr at Ecclesfield with a number 22.307. No other details. Not sure if I should waste my credits on these records and they don't give much away. Had no luck with the Burgins on any of the records, I must be doing something wrong!!!! Tomorrow I will start trailing Fergus, I plan to have more time then. And have been wondering what happened to the little girl Florence, Might get into Sheffield Indexers and see if I can get something. I think you could be right about Joseph and Ann Gillott Oh and I found Joseph on a later census (not absolutely sure it is the same one, he was about 63, so it must have been the 1871 census (have mislaid my notes) but he was married again to another Ann, no sign of Eliza or anyone else. I am falling asleep over this computer. Be back in the morning. Goodnight and Godbless you.

Doreen

Doreen Report 6 Aug 2011 17:08

Back again. Have found a Florence Hudson, daughter of Samuel, in the burial records. Her age is given as 2 and she was buried Sept. 21st .1871.in the Burngrave Cemetary, Sheffield. If this is our Florence she died one year before her father Samuel. And I have worked out that William Burgin's wife, Eliza Ann Hudson could be Samuel's sister who was born 1840, Williams wife was 41 in the 1881 census when Fergus was 12 and living with them. So Eliza Ann could have been Fergus's Aunt. I now have the 1891 Sheffield Census on CD so will do some more digging around. Probably will take a few hours so will get back tomorrow if anything turns up. Hope you are all having a lovely week-end.

Dea Report 6 Aug 2011 17:39

Doreen - I have just realised that you were talking about 'not using your credits' to look at those marriages!!!

You don't have to use credits to look at BMD details - they are free on
www.freebmd.org.uk

These cover 1837 to around 1940 ish so never pay for GR credits to see these!

I can't see that the one in 1837 could be them - there is no Joseph Hudson recorded on the page and, as they had a 10 year old son on 1841, they were 'probably' married much earlier than that!

Remember also that ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years on 1841 so, although it says that Ann is 25, she could be as much as 29 !!

Dea x

Doreen

Doreen Report 7 Aug 2011 10:50

Hello Dea, Thanks so much for the info on free bmd, that will make it much more easy as there is a lot to look up to make sure it is the right information. I see what you mean about the 1837 marriage, but I was thinking maybe Joseph had the son before he married Ann. But if the age was rounded as you say, we are looking at 1831 or before. Joseph was born around 1808 - 1811, so maybe should start looking 1828/30. But these would not be available on freebmd, so Joseph would have been around 20 and Ann probably 19 which ties in the son who is 10 on the 1841 census. Will see what I can dig up now. So good to have all your help.Thank you,

Dea

Doreen Report 8 Aug 2011 20:11

Hello Dea, We have been astonished to say the least when I found that Ellen and Samuel had two more daughters that were not on the 1871 census. It is a bit confusing as they were both named Ada but there is an explanation. The first Ada died at 5 weeks old and was buried October 19th 1871. Ellen must have become pregnant again in November 1871 and the second Ada was born August 1872. She was 2 months old when Samuel died in October 1872. Sadly this little girl also died when she was 14 months old and buried on October 26th 1873. Both buried in the same grave which was marked to have been reopened, obviously to lay the girls at rest together. You can imagine Ellen's state of mind at that time. And now we have lost tract of Ellen since October 73 when she was recorded as being at 10 Bellefield Street, till 1875 when John Arthur was born. Now we are trying to track down the Farnie family, as we are pretty sure that the visitor on the 1871 Census was Ellen Farnie. This name Farnie ties in with another member of the Hudson family, Jane Wilkinson Hudson who married a James Farnie in 1855. Jane's Father is listed as William Hudson, a Farmer and we are looking for a connection with him. Also James Farnie was born in Scotland, so maybe that is where the name Fergus came from. There are so many loose ends to tie up now, we are up to our eyes in it. I found a Farnie family on Genes on the 1871 Census using my credits but only the children were on the page, the Mother and Father were cut off so obviously on the previous page but the youngest child who was two was named Jane W, which makes me think it is the right family, as Jane Wilkinson Hudson was the one who married James Farnie, so somewhere the name Wilkinson figures somewhere. Now I am trying to find that connection. Hope you are not exhausted by now, after your busy day, I certainly am. Will let you know if anything turns up. Take care.
