Doreen Report 4 Aug 2011 19:05

Hello everyone, I sent a post earlier but it seems to have disappeared.T recap - Have been looking at the 1871 census, thank you Dea, looks very much like you found Ellen & Samuel, the census image is almost impossible to see but I have found Fergus in the Ecclesall Bierlow birth records for 1868, just need to see the actual record to make sure if he is Ellen and Samuel's. Am going through the death records now to see if he died as Ellen certainly didn't have the two younger children with them when she was living with John Mirfin in 1881. Also many thanks Jax for the marriage info, will search that too, but the screen keeps freezing up on me, maybe I am overusing the searches or am doing something wrong, am such a dummy on the computer. I do appreciate all the trouble you are all taking on my behalf. Will get back with anything I can dig up. Will be so wonderful if we can find Eliza.

Doreen Report 4 Aug 2011 18:22

Hello Everyone, I have looked at the 1871 census and it does look like our Samuel and Ellen's family, thank you Dea, as you say the image is abysmal, have been on it for hours trying to adjust the image, of course I am a dummy where the computer is concerned. It is a shock to find there are 2 more children, I can't make out the youngest daughter's name at all. Nor the visitor, who is listed as a scholar and the surname could be something like Furniss. I read it that she was 10 years old. But it looks like Fergus is right. I found a record in the births records for 1868 Jan-Feb-March for Fergus Hudson but not sure where to go from there, the screen keeps freezing up, probably I am overusing the searches. Am now in the middle of the searches of deaths for Fergus Hudson. Samuel died in 1872 and Ellen certainly never had them with her when she married John Mirfin in 1876. They may have gone to Samuel's family. The name Fergus sounds rather Scottish. If I could trace Samuel's Father, Joseph Hudson, it would maybe help to trace the two younger children. So that is 2 more that have done the disappearing act. Jax thank you for the info on the 1887 marriages, if Eliza switched her name round from Eliza Ann to Ann to Anne Eliza then we have been going thru a few wild goose chases. I am so slow at all this I shall probably be up to the early hours chasing these leads you have all been so kind to take the trouble to help me and I do appreciate it. Will come back with anything that makes sense. Would be so wonderful if we found Eliza.

P.S. - Looking at the image I think that Fergus could be 3, not 5.
Also I am not sure it is 'Florence' - It looks like a first initial, maybe an 'F', then the name Louise?

Both were born in Nether Hallam.

Doreen Report 4 Aug 2011 08:49

Hello, Jax and Patcham, Yes I have Eliza's birth certificate and Ellen and Samuel's marriage certificate.
The marriage certificate is dated Sept.11th 1865 and Samuel is 22, occupation Whitesmith, his Father Joseph Hudson, button Manufacturer. Ellen is 20 . Father Abraham Hudson. Samuel and Ellen both living at Cherry Tree Hill, Ecclesall Bierlow and they were married in Ecclesall Church
Also found a note regarding a baptism. Eliza Ann Hudson, baptised 25/12/66 (Christmas Day)! at St Peter and St Paul Church (later Cathedral), Samuel listed as Fire Iron Maker and address Sharrow Lane.
Will try to find them on the 1871 census, I know that Samuel died 10th October 1872, age 29. His occupation listed as Smth's striker, Ellen Hudson listed as being in attendance - back 72 Fawcett Street Sheffield. They seemed to move around a lot in those days.

Doreen has the birth cert Patcham which gives the parents as Ellen Hudson (maiden name) and Samuel Hudson?? which sounds doubtful unless a marriage cert can be found

Doreen Report 3 Aug 2011 21:59

Hello Jax, Ellen's maiden name was Hudson which may seem a bit strange but she married Samuel who had the same surname as herself. I thought maybe they were connected ,perhaps cousins, and tried to trace Samuel's parents. All I could find was Samuels Father was named Joseph Hudson and he was a button manufacturer, this info was on the marriage certificate. I found a Joseph Hudson who was a button manufacturer at 54 Broad Street, Park. , I think this was in the Genuki Sheffield Parish professions and Trades for Sheffield in Pigot's Directory of 1834 but don't know what to do from this. I am not very good at these things. Also tried to connect them up with Abraham Hudson who is Ellen's Father but no luck. I thought if I could find Samuel's family that Eliza may have gone to stay with them. It's all very confusing.

jax Report 3 Aug 2011 21:30

What was Ellen's maiden name on the birth cert?

Doreen Report 3 Aug 2011 21:16

Thank you for all your kind efforts, I did check the marriage for Whitehead but it was not our Eliza. Yes the name for Eliza's Father was on the birth certificate. Sorry Mike I should have said that Eliza's Mother was Ellen. I did put on the information on the family that we found on the 1881 Census but of course everything changed by the 1891 Census with John Mirfin taking another wife and there was no mention of Eliza or John Hudson. We have also tried some Elizabeth Hudsons but she wasn't named Elizabeth on her birth certificate, just Eliza. You have all worked so hard on this and unfortunately it seems like a mystery never to be solved. Kind regards to you all.
