Where does it give for Eleanor's birthplace on 1891 census ?

Could she be this one ?

Births Jun 1861
Houldsworth Eleanor Hamilton - Stepney 1c 505

Yes, William's wife would have married under her then legal name, not her maiden name.

So if that death in 1892 is in fact your William Jarvis, it does look like Eleanor was his wife and remarried in 1899

..which would explain why she is not Mrs Gibson on 1901 census.

On ocassions the information might not be accurately written down as the enumerator wrote it not the families, also sometimes the information is mistranscribed. 1911 was the first time famlies wrote the census' themselves.

if you search for the information again on freebmd you can look at the image yourself for free by clicking on the glasses next to name.

Sorry Nicola our posts seem to be out of sync, lol. Yes I saw that death and assumed it was williams eldest child as it was 9 years old. But if as you say it is 39 then that must be his death sadly. that would explain Eleanors remarriage in 1899. seems she kept her former husbands name. I wonder if they managed to have any children between marrying in 1882 & 1892?

hi Nicola, thanks but dont think thats him as born in wrong place. My one is a Norfolk man.He married his 1st wife of less than a year, margaret Terras in Kings Lynn. She died in West Ham. She came from that area. My assumption is perhaps she died in child birth with her original family. William married again in West Ham his second wife. Hwere the second wife came from i have no idea as the Surname Midwin seems a bit rare .I'm suspecting it may be a mistranscription but from what ,Ive no clue.

on the original document it looks like the age is 39, which would make it about right.

sorry forgot to add the he died dec quarter 1892

Hi Nicola ,I do not have much other info on William, other than where he was born (as above) parents John Gibson and Susan Jarvis. He has been mistranscribed or had spelling variation occasionally as Gipson, back in the day when I had census access and on freebmd.

Hmm ..confusing ,I've just found on freebmd an Eleanor Hamilton Gibson marrying in West Ham in 1899. Would not have been old enough to be a child of William and Eleanor marrying, therefore I can only assume the worst that William is perhaps dead?
This leads me to another question :- would victorian widows have tended to remarry under their maiden name or there former husbands name?

Is there any other information you have that may help get as close as possible?

Gary

Gary Report 4 Aug 2011 21:06

Sadly Mike I'm out of work and the basic gr is the only subscrition I can afford anymore. I usually rely on x referencing free resources.I rarely ask lookup request, but now I have got stuck, causing one of these occasions requiring the census. :-)

Gary Report 4 Aug 2011 20:53

Thanks both. Yes, I dont think the one you found in Chelsea is them Nicola. William Jarvis Gibson was born in East Winch/Freebridge Lynn in Norfolk C1853.
Sorry,I should have said this at begining.

There is this birth but she wouldn't be 40 in 1901

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Jun 1856
SKIKELTHORPE Emma - W Ham 4a 13

...nor would she be Skikelthorpe if she'd married.

Of course, you COULD buy the marriage cert and all would be revealed !

haha my booboo missed that

Gary

Gary Report 4 Aug 2011 20:37

Thanks Mike. Cant see many Emma Skikelthorpes on freebmd that could cause any confusion,so looks more likely he married Eleanor Midwin( who I can find no other trace of on freebmd for a birth.)

Mike * Report 4 Aug 2011 20:32

Nicola, if that is 1891 census, I would think that Emma would have been too young to marry in 1882

NicolaDunbyNocula

NicolaDunbyNocula Report 4 Aug 2011 20:28

I have done a search for an eleanor as well on the 1891, looks like Emma might be the likely wife of your William.
