Looking at the NOK, he names his mother Annie so it would seem his father Thomas has died. The record is dated 1915.

Spend £7.50 and buy 30 credits for Scotlandspeople and you can check out these births and see if any of these were born on the correct July date (even if the year is out, it may be your John.

Still struggling with this one if anyone with good Irish knowledge can help :)

Amy

Amy Report 27 Oct 2012 13:54

I'm still searching for birth info for this so I can order an irish birth certificate.

Up to date details below:

JOHN THOMAS DOYLE
Born 14 JULY 1895 Ireland
Marriaged to Lucy Friend 1920
Death 11 AUG 1954 Croydon

Wedding certificate shows father as THOMAS DOYLE (deceased) Boot & shoe seller

I'm looking for more birth details so I can order a birth certificate and find the details of his mother and more info on THOMAS.

Any additional help would be great!

Thanks All & sorry for reposting - need to get to the bottom of this one.

Amy....It may be worthwhile asking someone..(unless you have access yourself) to search Army Records from WW1 they are on Ancestry I believe...however they are incomplete....

You did not need a passport for the time in question so would not find anything there...

This is where I got all the information from above, it will take you straight to names of John doyles born 1895 in ireland, its a GRO index click on a name and it will give you the information you will need. I picked out names that were relevant to the date of birth you gave, not sure how long the time limit was for registration.

I hope this helps

Nicola :-)

Hi all, thank you for your help. Below is all the info i have:

Marriage Certificate: John Doyle married Lucy May friend 1920 Croydon. Age 24. Father - Thomas Doyle boot/shoe seller (deceased)

Death entry:
Name: John T Doyle
Birth Date: abt 1895
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1954
Age at Death: 59
Registration district: Croydon
Inferred County: Surrey
Volume: 5g
Page: 102

Info from Grandmother: DOB 14/07/1895 Ireland. Joined British Army. Married 1920 to non catholic so family disowned him.

My assumptions: Searched passport applications (up to 1903) but couldn't find one so assumed he still lived in Ireland in 1901. Also assumed he only came over at the time of joining the army so his family still lived in Ireland.
Searched UK census 1901 and 1911 for Thomas and John and no results appear.

Not much to go on really! :-)

Hi Amy, It is most unlikely that you will find a birth cert as the Custom House in Dublin where all records were stored was burned down in the 1900's with the loss of the majority of the paperwork due to fire and water damage. However if you have narrowed it down through the census records and know the area's it is relatively easy to access the church records for those areas. Doyle was predominantly Cork/Tipperary name so it might be a good idea to start with those counties. Did they give parents names/ occupations on marriage cert? If there was any other bit of information, no matter how small, it makes it easier to track at this side of the water. Good luck with your search.

Eringobragh1916 Report 6 Aug 2011 11:34

Amy...A word of caution before you go buying Certs.

You say you have narrowed it down through the Irish Census...

1) Thomas Dolye may have been deceased by 1901 therefore would not be on the Census as head of family...

2) Have you looked for a possible Doyle family on the UK Census...just because John was born in Ireland dont assume the family was still there after his birth...

Thanks for the above, do they show middlde names? I think his middle name was thomas.
I tried to order a cert but you need loads of info before it will submit. What other info do you have?
Thank you all for your help, feel like we have nearly cracked it!

Looking back on this thread to what you said earlier about the census records for ireland, can you remember the places of birth for the 3 you narrowed down?
