I am looking for John Carpenter Hawkey, born 1813 Tregony, Cornwall, blacksmith. I have found him in 1841, unmarried, living in Mawgan, and in 1871 in St Columb Minor with 2nd wife Patience, widowed daughter Elizabeth Tregoning 25 and her 2 children. He married Patience Hawke in St Columb in 1869. He died in 1872 in St Columb Minor. I can't find the family in 1851 or 1861, and haven't found his first marriage, although there are 3 possibles in St Columb in Dec 1843. I'd be very grateful if anyone can track him down in the missing years. Thanks. |

No I haven't tried the Cornish parish clerks - good idea. And I didn't know about the Cornish free census - I'll try that too. Many thanks. The trouble is there are so many Hawkeys in Cornwall it's like looking for a needle in a haystack, even with his unusual middle name! And yes, I did find the probate entry - I took advantage of the free week that Ancestry offered to look up probate records! Thanks. |

The 1843 marriage looks a good bet given that daughter Elizabeth has Rowe as middle name but where is Elizabeth in the 1851 census quoted above? |

And Elizabeth Rowe hawkey died 1868 Mar Q St Columb aged 51 (1817) 5c 74 so John didnt waste much time in marrying again |

1841 has Elizabeth Vivian aged 24 (1817) with (presumed) parents Thomas and Margaret living in St Columb Minor |

I am afraid , Nicky , that we can rule out your 1851 census -the Christianne shown there married John Greenslade and in 1881 her mother is with them Elizabeth Hawke aged 77 (1804) b St Mawgan |
