MarieCeleste Report 19 Aug 2011 20:43

Daniel - I'd already seen that info on your tree on ancestry, the only help that would be is in getting a copy of their marriage certificate again to confirm details.

Problem with info passed down in families is that it's not too reliable, no matter how adamant the relatives giving the info are that they're right.

It's entirely up to you whether or not you follow advice given on here, but this link may be useful: General Register Office http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

A Hill / Donald marriage in cardiff

Marriages Mar 1913 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Donald Rosina Hill Cardiff 11a 679
Hill Albert Donald Cardiff 11a 679

and another

Marriages Sep 1901 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Donald Mary Jane Cardiff 11a 628
Hill Arthur Cardiff 11a 628

so those births above could belong to one of these couples

Daniel, did you get Arthur's DOB and parent's names from his birth cert?

What other info have you got to arrive at his parents' POBs?

If you use the freebmd site, you will find other Hill births with MMN Donald, in Cardiff.

These look like 2 siblings for Arthur (both have Mother's Maiden Surname as Donald)
John K Hill 1913 Sep Q Cardiff
Constance M Hill b1915 Jun Q Cardiff

My point exactly jax!

I do have some reservations about the Jeanie Donald found in 1901 & 1911. That one was only 17 in 1911 and Daniel's Arthur was born later that year in Cardiff, around 300 miles away.

I guess it IS possible that her parents sent her away to have the baby .........

There was no need to marry to take the fathers name just like today

Daniel, I searched both variants (Donald & Hill/Hills) in UK and Wales.

However, if they married elsewhere then it wouldn't have shown up.

Do you know when & where they married? (You'll need that to get further back).

Yes thank you all for the the help

@Marie -

They were married because my second name goes under hill so Mark Hills did marry jeanne donald ... the HILLS became HILL

The father in the 1901 census is a plumber also/maybe same family. Just be aware, it does take a bit of guess work, but you need to find as much solid information as you can before venturing back! Good luck!

MarieCeleste Report 19 Aug 2011 19:56

Daniel, is it possible that Jeanne(ie) & Mark never married - I'm not finding a marriage record, but I did find this:

Surname First name(s) Spouse District Vol Page
Marriages Sep 1922
DONALD Jeannie Wildey Carlisle 10b 1106
Wildey William Donald Carlisle 10b 1106

Daniel - that's why I said to buy his birth certificate. That way you'll be 100% sure of parents names, Mark's occupation and you'll also have an address. Seeing as Arthur Ronald was born just months after the 1911 census there's a chance they were at same address.

Anything else is conjecture and it could all go horribly wrong if you trace the wrong people.

The information you've provided so far has changed slightly so please don't take chances.

Jo1015

Jo1015 Report 19 Aug 2011 19:32

r u able to view the original census records? The whole family appear to be from scotland, except their 2 youngest sons, the handwriting on census is quite bad tho, im not too good with reading old handwriting anyway! But can make the majority out if u cant view them. Does it make sense for them to be in ' cumberland' in 1901?
