yes Meg that census was for a James Dunderdale 7 Alice Parkinson

The one the OP wanted is James Dunderdale & Alice Shorrock

So Grace died in 1906. Unusual to have an estate at all, let alone more than £200. And her father was a timber yardsman.

Mike *

Mike * Report 28 Sep 2011 23:34

If Alice was born Dunderdale then she would have been born out of wedlock.

Didn't Grace die as a spinster ( according to her probate posted earlier)

Robert

Robert Report 28 Sep 2011 23:46

Madmeg Report 28 Sep 2011 23:53

Hi Donna. Well, it was unusual in the early 1900s for most families to even draw up wills (they couldn't afford solicitors fees and didn't know what wills were for), and most unusual for working-class families to have any money that they could pass on after death.

Given that Grace was unmarried, she wouldn't have had a husband to leave her money. And her father at least was still alive, so he would usually have wanted to hang onto his money for himself and living family.

If I were you I would pay the £5 or so (forgotten the amount) to get a copy of her will. Though it may not tell you where she got her £200 from - it's a lot of money in 1906, today's equivalent of about £20,000.

Best wishes

Meg

for general interest Robert

66 Freckleton St is the centre of a block of terraced houses BUT this one has a basement, part of which has been converted into a garage, as well as 2 top storeys. There are steps up to the front door and at a quick look (could not park for long - double yellow lines and almost opposite police station!) it appeared to have a frontage with 2 windows, one either side of the door. The others only had one window and just 2 storeys. Definitely today the poshest house in the block and could account for the money Grace left if the family had money. There are several indications from looking at the catalogue of the Lancs record office that there was money in the Chipping Dunderdale family.

Hi Ann

So you drove there and had a look? That is beyond the call of duty. So spill the beans about the money in the Chipping Dunderdale family. Why did Grace had some when she was a single parent? Is this just a gut feeling?

Ann, what wills have you found that Donna might find useful? I've only found the will of Grace,

Meg

It is only 2 miles from where I live and one of the routes I can take into Kirkham so it was curiosity really.

I had a look at the Lancs RO catalogue and there seem to be quite a few references to a Ralph Dunderdale selling land, and wills of other Dunderdales from 'over Wyre' and wondered if Grace was given money as presents when she was 21 or left something in a relative's will or wills. I just put 'Dunderdale' in their search engine. The other thought was that it could have been 'conscience money' for the upkeep of the child.

Lancs RO is closed until 24 Oct or curiosity would have sent me looking there. While they have been closed (since July) I have been compiling a list of what I wanted to look up for myself so it would have been no trouble
