Could someone please look up the death record for William Pickett born 1855 in Bristol,Living in Hunslet 1901 census (brushmaker) 1911 census - boarder in Bolton still Brushmaker but I have been told that he had a glass business in Leeds in 1934 ?? never been able to find his death records

June Report 8 Oct 2011 21:35

Thanks for the information, It would make sense that he was also a boarder at that time and the marriage status being left blank.

June, given the circumstances I'd guess he just assumed the name. If he'd tried to change it legally he would have run the risk of being found.

That 1911 census I posted on page 1 gave that Harry Wilde's occupation as "Check Weigh Man". This is a definition of that job:

check·weigh·man
a representative elected by coal miners to check the findings of the mine owner's weighman where miners are paid by the weight of coal mined.

Ginny/Marie Celeste,

This is a very complicated lifeline !!

I know that Henry Pickett born 1888 married in 1907 to Alice Ann Ruddock and had a son William Henry in 1908 he denied paternity and left Hunslet, I have been told recently that he worked in a mine in 1908,there was an accident and he disappeared - but I think he was a labourer on his marriage certificate of 1907.
He changed his name at some point to Harry Wilde and married Mary Ann Thomas in 1917 this was my fathers parents.
In 1932 when Mary Ann died Harry (Henry's) sister (Elizabeth Hunter nee Pickett found her brother after 20 + years and the Leeds history came to light.
I would like to confirm if he was a minor and if there was an accident that he disappeared from were there any local press reports or police reports that I could look into ? Also how would he have changed his name, legally or just assumed ? His first wife declared him dead after being missing for 7 years how would this have been recorded ?

Just to be devil's advocate here, it's not impossible that he retrained as an electrician (he was young enough) and as the use of electricity was growing quickly at that time and there was the demand.

I do think that the 1917 marriage could very well be him, particularly given the father's first name and occupation.

Hi

Call me stupid (no dont) but how do you know that Wilde and Pickett are the same person?

On those records that have been posted Harry Pickett goes from being a labourer to being Harry Wilde and an electrician

Its not an uncommon name(s) and there are records for Harry Wilde with a father William in and around the same area that you mention

Hi,

I know that Henry Pickett was born in Stavely Derbyshire in 1888, his father was William Pickett,Brushmaker and Mother Isabella.
The details of the 1901 Census are correct for Windsor Terrace.
He married Alice Ann Ruddock in 1907 and a son William Henry was born in 1908.
Shortly after William Henry was born (not sure when ) he left Hunslet and
in 1917 I know that he married my Grandma as Harry Wilde, I have a copy of this marriage certificate and know that he is shown here as a widower and fathers name William Wilde (both incorrect facts at that time).
I am trying to find out what happened to him between 1908 and 1917

Have asked June to return and give some feedback.

Hi June

You asked for Henry Pickett 1888 living in Napier St....thats what I posted

Then you throw in all sorts of other information which I cant make head or tail of.

Can you go back a step, how have you got to Henry Pickett? Start with the facts, ie things you have certificates for and we might be able to help you, other wise you'll end up following the wrong line

I really think the "Harry Wilde" in St Helen's in 1911 is her man! The birthplace is given as Chesterton but I think it should be Chesterfield (which I think Staveley is part of).

The fact the marital status is blank is also suspicious.

Dea Report 7 Oct 2011 21:22

For what it is worth - I think the 1911 Henry had parents Henry + Elizabeth so I really do not think he is 'your' Henry !!
