I have just received the birth certificate for Charles Usher born 24/7/1913 showing his mother as Isabella Usher (nee Quinn) and father as Charles Usher. He was born at 214 Victoria Square Liverpool. Can find no trace of marriage no dates of birth of parents. Occuaption of father was Ships Steward. Could anyone point me in the right direction of how to find out further information.
Many thanks Olwen

He seems to be an only child so perhaps his parents didn't married and his mother used the surname Usher to save face?

Thanks for all your help. Funnily enough I did a search for a marriage on Charles Usher Senior and it came up that a person of that name married an Isabella Johnson. and seeing that rootgatherer came up with an Isabella Johnson Quinn I might be onto a lead. I will carry on going down that root. A great many thanks to all the help given. <3 <3

But that marriage was 1913 and Isabella Johnson Quinn was born 1888.

Actually that marriage is the one you're looking for but his name has been filed in the wrong place:

Marriages Jun 1913 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Johnson Isabella Usher W.Derby 8b 817
Kelly Alice Mangan W. Derby 8b 817
Mangan James Kelly W. Derby 8b 817

His name is missing there but it's here

Cryer Thomas W Ellis Ashton 8d 817
Ellis Sarah H Cryer Ashton 8d 817
Porter Harriet Scott Ashton 8d 817
Scott David Porter Ashton 8d 817
Usher Charles Johnson W.Derby 8d 817

Somebody misread the volume number as 8d when it was 8b so it was filed with the Ashton marriages.

My theory:

Isabella Johnson Quinn was actually born Isabella Johnson, 1877, illegitimate daughter of Margaret Jane Johnson.

Births Jun 1887 (>99%)
Johnson Isabella Liverpool 8b 72

Then Margaret Jane married Michael Quinn and Isabella used her stepfather's name.

Marriages Mar 1888 (>99%)
JOHNSON Margaret Jane Liverpool 8b 208
QUINN Michael Liverpool 8b 208

Then Margaret Jane died:

Either this one, no age given:

Deaths Mar 1893 (>99%)
Quinn Margaret Jane _ Liverpool 8b 27

Or this one:

Deaths Dec 1893 (>99%)
Quinn Margaret 33 Liverpool 8b 16

Then Michael married Jane Henders 1896:

Marriages Mar 1896 (>99%)
Henders Jane Liverpool 8b 105
Quinn Michael Liverpool 8b 105

And Michael died the following year:

Deaths Dec 1897 (>99%)
Quinn Michael 43 Liverpool 8b 62

Isabella married Charles Usher using her legal name of Isabella Johnson.

Oh! Look what I just found:

Liverpool, Lancashire, England, Catholic Baptisms, 1802-1906
about Isabella Johnson Name: Isabella Johnson
Birth Date: 12 Apr 1887
Baptism Date: 16 Apr 1887
Parish: Holy Cross
Father's Name: Margaritae Johnson
Mother's Name: Michaelis Quinn

Wonder why they didn't marry before Isabella was born? Michael was evidently the father.

Oh' I hope Olwen comes back to the thread.

With reference to your comments re Michael Quinn marrying a Margaret Jane Johnson in 1888 I have had a look on the marriage for that date but it doesn't show a match for that couple. Am I doing something wrong.

Thanks for that I did look at the marriage section on GR !!!

I am in a bit of a quandry as I have just bought FTM and it gives 6 months free access to all records on Ancestry. However I am justt 5 weeks into my platinum 6 months with GR. Do I start my free cover with Ancestry or leave it for a white. I am new to all this and do get confused as there is so many places to look for information. I will have a look at freebmd.org.uk ;-)

Further help required from you wonderful people please. after all that amazing information you found out for me.
The father of Charles Usher( born 1913) was a ship steward on his son's birth certificate and also called Charles Usher but no further information given.
where on earth or the internet (!!) do I begin to find out any details of him. No one in the family know any information.

WayneTracey Report 8 Nov 2011 09:22

Ok how about this one?

Father is Charles Usher, and Charles junior was a Ship's Fender Maker... maybe he digressed to being onboard 2 years later?

It's also worth noting there is only 3 miles between this address and the address for Isabella Quinn in 1911.
