Now that is the question! The family were wealthy and his 'profession' by 1861 was Landed Proprietor, etc. In 1859 he applied for a Passport to travel to 'The Continent'. Perhaps a Grand Tour? He didn't marry until he was 41 years old.

Studying what?

Nicola'S

Nicola'S Report 24 Feb 2021 15:33

Yes, that information from Flick and others was very helpful.

My train of thought is now that perhaps he wasn't in Manchester at all in 1951. He would have been 19/20 and perhaps studying elsewhere?

I'm still a little bit hopeful that this route is where we may find him .........

ErikaH Report 24 Feb 2021 15:00

You do realise, I trust, that a large number of 1851 pieces for the Manchester area are simply not available, due to water damage?

EDIT

You were told this by 'Flick' - and others - back in 2011

I've returned to this thread because I can now confirm that in fact his parents were still alive in the 1851 census.

Father John Law died in 1852 and mother Mary Law nee Dalton died in 1865. I found the MI, so am happy about that!

Back to Arthur's whereabouts in 1851. He is not living with his parents in Crumpsall, Manchester. In the 1861 census, he is living with his younger half-brother John and wife Mary and their three daughters in grand style with six servants in Urmston, Manchester. [Sadly, this house is now under the M6 ....].

It has occurred to me that he could have been studying somewhere in the UK and that his name may have been mistranscribed? He is not with the usual family suspects.

I'm back on the trail again in the hope that he may be found. If anyone out there has a need to get frustrated on this search with me, please join in!

:-D

Vera, please don't think me rude for not responding when I said that I would.

Arrival of Grandbaby No.2 occurred in the middle of all of this!

I will return to this, I promise.

Thank you in the meantime,
Nicola

Vera, only just seen your above reply.

I will return to all of this when we get back after the weekend.

No, you've not got the wrong family; I may have jumped the gun when I said that both his parents were dead without looking back at my notes!

Apologies.

Nicola S

Have been having a search around. You say Arthur no longer in Crumpsall area in 1851. Just wondering how you knew that and also that his parents had died by that time. I think I may have been following the wrong family as I have a Mary Law widowed in 1861 with daughter Frances (Worthington) and family?

Nicola,
Just a thought, you could contact the Manchester Library to see if they have a Kellys Directory for 1851 or something similar that could help to find him.

Thank you Anne of GG.

We've got all that lot and plenty more. He's just being annoyingly elusive for 1851.

It's a remote possibility that he could be in Bath, where his future wife came from. But that should show up on an Ancestry trawl, but doesn't.

The info I found was on FMP census 1851

Gosh, that's amazing information Vera.

Thank you.

Although by 1851, our Arthur is no longer living in actual Crumpsall. His parents have died, he is aged 20/21 and no doubt 'launched' himself on the world. He obviously had a great deal of money since he lived off the Income of Dividends and Rents and left a sizeable estate.

Unlike his brothers, he was not a Cheetham's scholar.

Hmmmmmmmmmm ..

Thank you both for your knowledge.

Arthur's brother John Henry Law is to be easily found in 1851 living nearby in Urmston.

I feel that Arthur is probably somewhere with a family member. They were a very close family and often shared houses in and around Manchester and then latterly in Silverdale, Lancashire.

Does this help??

You GR lot have been so kind and helpful in the past and, to date, NONE of our family members have ever escaped your eagle eyes when mine have failed!!

From "About 1851 England Census", Ancestry

In addition, the census returns of the following localities have been damaged by water during storage. Most of the damaged pieces are in the area of Manchester. However, through the use of new technology they have now been indexed. The Manchester and Lancashire Family History Society recovered tens of thousands of names working on a small scale to prove the technology. Ancestry.com used forensic and photographic techniques on a large scale to take names from records, which are unreadable by the naked eye because of mold and water damage. >>>>>The process yielded abt 165,000 names that weren’t previously available.<<<<<

Flick is quite correct...unfortunately Crumpsall is one of the parishes affected.
