Hi Folks,
Yes Barbara we are following the correct family, at least from the marriage of an Ellen Iredale to a John Haigh. As mentioned before we do have the birth certificate for Benjamin Haigh showing 10/10/1880 with parents John Haigh and Ellen Iredale.

Personal family notes confirm that he was a fish salesman's clerk and married Janey Isabella Chatburn. Their children are: Nellie b21/11/1905, married Frank Wood then Albert Roberts. Arnold b22/7/1907, married Doris Richardson. Annie b11/7/1916, (my partners mother) married Edwin Brook, then William Cooper.

We had not researched Elizabeth Haigh1877 yet, so thanks for her possible marriage information. And we found Arthur1879, single with Ellen Haigh, widow, in the 1911 census.

Now back to Ellen. We may have to admit that we were mistaken regarding Ellen's birth area and parents. We have orderd the marriage cerificate, being informed that the despatch date from GRO would be the 9th Dec. As mentioned this will show their respective fathers. Hopefully, with Christmas mail, it should arrive here in South Australia within the next two weeks!?

Terence- regarding 'your' Ellen being the daughter of John Iredale, on the 1861 census showing this detail, it quite clearly states that his Ellen Iredale was born in Longwood not Elland. I have already printed two births of Ellen Iredale one in Halifax, which is yours and the one in Huddersfield which is the daughter of John Iredale. -jl

Many thanks everyone, I have an Ellen with father John Iredale who married twice. First wife Elizabeth Shaw1824-1853, married in 1847 with 2 daughters, including Ellen1851. Second wife is Ann Kaye1834, married in 1854 with 3 boys and 4 girls. With your other findings folks, I'm wondering if I have the right family! I will have to go through everything again. As with the Haigh's, it certainly is a minefield!
With the weekend coming up I may not check this column and the 'tree' until next week.

I have found this on Family Search .John Haigh born 1847 Stainland ,wife Eliza 1847 ,children Alice 1869,Elizabeth 1873/ Benjamin 1879 ,This family lived at Scapegoat Hill Golcar .
now this is another family =John Haigh born Stainland 1847 ,wife Eliz 1841 from Elland daughter Eliza1877/Arthur 1879 /Ben 1880 all born Lindley ,they lived 67 East Street Lindley cum Quarmby .

Hannah Maria Iredale married Enos Craven and Ellen is living with them aged 20 at Lindley but I can't find them on the 1861.

( have to go out but will look at this again at a later time)-jl

The census in 1851 shows Ellen Iredale with father Benjamin but there is a death of a Benjamin Iredale in Halifax in Dec qtr 1851, followed by a marriage of a Hannah Maria Iredale( the mother) in Halifax Mar 1853. -jl

Terence, the 1861 census I am looking at shows John Haigh, son of Abraham but there is no William mentioned. Living at Westgate, lindley cum Quarmby which is the former name of West Street, very close to the later address of East Street. There is a family of Iredales living next door but one. I have found Ellen Iredale on the 1851 daughter of Benjamin born at Elland which is next door to Stainland.-jl

Thanks again Barbara, also "ellieathome". I got the middle name of William from the 1861 census transcription shown as "Haigh, John Wm".
Strangely, he is shown as "Haigh, William" (not John) in the 1851 census transcription. On that census, could John's 1817 father's wife Martha 1818 be the daughter of David 1783 and Hannah1786 Armitage?
As you say Barbara, with so many John Haigh's it is very difficult to get the right one.

When looking for a birth for John ----Stainland came under the Halifax district

I think the March 1891 death would be the right one---can't be sure though as there are so many John Haighs. (Not sure on William being his 2nd name though ? )

Lets see who his fathers name and occ. is in the Marriage cert and wittness' see if that helps us.
