I know what the internet can be like Anne, but I am surprised and grateful to have had any responses so quick! Have taken a look at the Canadian archives, but all seem to revert back to Ancestry.com (if I have the right pages). I believe it was 1911 from what family has said in the past, but I am not convinced 100%, this is why if possible I would like to trace him in Canada to confirm that he was the George England who sailed from Bristol in 1911 and not the George England who sailed from Liverpool in 1924.
Thanks again both
Gareth

Lynne From Up North !! Report 4 Dec 2011 22:01

The 1911 census must be the one that Gareth mentions in his original posting as he is living at 2 Howells Row, Godreaman, Aberdare, Glamorgan.

Children named as Henry G born c1890; Emily born c1894 and Thomas W born c1900 - 1901 census. Wife named as Emily P born c1869 Longload, Somerset.

EDIT
At least we know we have the correct George England in Wales, the only one that needs to be verified is the Passenger listing !

He left a wife Emily Curtis and 3 children behind Lynne. He married in 1889, he moved up to Aberaman, Glamorganshire (1881 census) from Somerset and his wife and child followed him by 1901 census but he was living alone by the 1911 census and Emily and the children (Henry, Emily and Thomas) were boarding at another address. I have found 2 George Englands' that sailed to Canada, one in 1911 and one in 1924. One is listed as a miner and the other as an Engineer. This is why I would like to find out some information about what happened in Canada as from the 1881census - 1911 census we have him as a carpenter.

Have not deserted the ship! my interenet has been a pain....crashing...so do forgive me.

I found the same as Lynne.......single..he was a miner. Gareth how do you know he was there in 1911 to assume that is him?

EDIT...........Archives of Canada is a good place to see what records are available..........also around this time of the evening we have our Canadian friends aboard who will help.

I'm assuming that he married at some point. The above passenger list states that he was single, however I may have found him in the 1901 England census, with wife and children.

Do you know any names i.e his wife, children etc.

Also a possible for 1911, showing George as married for 21 years with 3 children, however he is shown on the census by himself - no wife, no children!

Thanks Lynne! Yes I think it could well be, it seems to match the info we have. I am wondering where I would go to find more information about him and what happened to him in Canada, any ideas? I'm new to all this and although I've plenty of ancestors in the UK I can research George intrigues me.

Thanks Lynne and Ann for your quick responses. My grandfathers name was George England, born 1869 in Somerset. We think he sailed to Montreal onboard the Royal Edward on 31 May 1911.

Hi Gareth,

If you could post the name of your great grandfather, perhaps someone on the boards can help you.

Hi, Can anyone give me a hand please as I'm not sure where to go now. My great grandfather sailed to Canada around 1911, we think to Montreal, but have an onward destination of Winnipeg. He was born in 1869 in Somerset, but on the 1891 census was living as a Boarder in Aberaman, Glamorganshire. Where would be the next step for me to start looking? I would be grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction please.

THANKS
GARETH
