i can't seem to find Betsey Ware MANLEY in the 1891 census. i have tried numerous combinations of names(she has been enumerated with quite a variety of spellings), place of birth and no date of birth, but with no luck.

can anyone offer suggestions as to where I might look or how I might look or is this one of those times when she simply won't be found?

thank you so much to anyone who can offer help!

1851 - aged 24, born gravesend kent, married, living 36 New Rd Gravesend, with her parents and son.
1861 - aged 34, born gravesend kent, living 38 parrock st, Milton, with her mother. betsey is a music teacher.
1871 - aged 41, born gravesend kent, widowed, living 28 bath st, Gravesend, is a lodger and is a music teacher.
1881 - aged 54, born gravesend kent, living 32 wakefield st, gravesend, is a lodger and now a needlewoman.
???
1901 - aged 72 and living in the almshouse, old row, gravesend.
1908 - died.

I have looked on FMP and I cannot find her??? I wonder if she is living with someone and the enumerator has put the wrong surname???

vanessa Report 16 Dec 2011 05:13

hi Lynski
that is a good thought.
i will try putting her first name in and checking all surnames - after all, she was a lodger in 2 of the censuses.
thanks!

hi Helen and Vera
thanks for doing all this research for me while I was sleeping!
i have a copy of Betsey's baptism from the St George Church. isn't it lovely to see an ancestor's name in that old handwriting.

it still makes her MIA in 1891..
i did get a note from a lady at the Gravesend Cemetery who said one of my ancestors had been buried as Hanley not Manley so maybe I will try all census searches again with an H.
