Mary

many illegitimate children added the name of a "father" to their marriage certificates ....... it looked better for the in-laws.

Sometimes they said the father was deceased .... thus providing a good reason for him not attending the wedding

Other times they used the name of a real person ..... grandfather, uncle, family friend, local dignitary,

or they made up a name.

If, as you say, there is no name of the father on the birth certificates for the girls, then it is more than likely that they were illegitimate.

and thus that Martha made up the name.

Empey Report 11 Jan 2012 17:10

I am looking for Mary Mills fro Montgomeryshire, in the 1880s. She had two daughters, Sarah Ann b 1884 and Martha b1885, both born on Black Hill, near Newtown, Montgomery. There is no father's name on either birth certificate but the name William Mills (deceased) appears on Martha's marriage cert in 1904. Neither daughter is with her mother at the time of the 1891 census (they are being looked after by a family called Pugh, on Black Hill), or in subsequent censuses. I do not have birth or death dates for Mary and I cannot find a suitable marriage.

Please can anyone help?

Mary
