Hi Bea and Ann, Just got in, staggered by the amount of info you have posted, sounds like my initial thoughts have been confimed by your brilliant detective work. I would probably never have uncovered the truth byt for your great work.
Many thanks Alan :-) :-) :-)

sounds about right

it would not be the first time a grandson has been recorded as son especially if the others of a similar age were really sons or daughters

it probably solves why the other births were recorded but not his and why he is of a very similar age to Jane

Dea

Dea Report 22 Jan 2012 14:34

SO - It looks like Henry was the illigitimate son of Henry + Elizabeth's daughter Elizabeth ???

He was recorded as their grandson on 1851 but had become their son by 1861 ?

William (1832), Sarah, Alice & Esther all appear to have been baptised in Wrightington

lancashireAnn Report 22 Jan 2012 13:15

what puzzles me is that on both 1851 & 1861 Jane & Henry are the same age and there are birth registered in Upholland for Esther (Easter!) Ann, Jane & Mary. Why not Henry?

eg

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1851
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
BIMSON Mary Upholland Wigan & Leigh UPHL/6/358

P.S. - He is the same one who was down as 'grandson' on 1851 - he was entered once with his family and again with his grandparents - confirmed by the fact that his sister Mary was also with him in both households.

I agree - he (Ellen's son) is not the Henry we are looking for, although he also married an 'Alice' but a different one .

I am still looking.

The Ellen who had a son Henry in 1842 - did we think she was the Ellen Banks in 1991. That one shows the Henry Bimpson (son) as widowed and living with her in 1881 so not the Henry married to Alice (see p1)

Dea

Dea Report 21 Jan 2012 19:49

I have been looking at it and I have not pinned them down as yet, though, they did have a daughter Ellen on 1841 and we know that an 'Ellen' unmarried had a son Henry in the area but that was c 1842 so it is still very confused.

I will work on it again tomorrow.

Hi Dea, thanks for all your continuing help, i don't have a copy of the 1851 census for the other henry, who is the 'grandson'
Alan

Dea

Dea Report 21 Jan 2012 19:03

I still have a 'leaning' towards the other one being yours!!

i.e. - the 'grandson' on the 1851!

Can't explain why but I am working on it !!

Hi Ann, thanks for the info abt Henry Woods/Bimson that seems to answer why we can't find a birth certificate for him.
We have the 1851 census that shows Henry 5yrs old born Standish living with NICHOLAS, CHARLOTTE, LUKE 5 MTHS and LUKE grandfather.
thanks Alan :-)

lancashireAnn Report 21 Jan 2012 14:42

this is pure guesswork but if Nicolas & Charlotte did not marry until 1848 could this be Henry

Baptisms: 22 Feb 1846 Parish Church, Euxton, Lancashire, England
Henry Woods - Child of Charlotte Woods
Abode: Charnock Rd.
Occupation: Weaver
Baptised by: J. Williams
Register: Baptisms 1841 - 1900, Page 11, Entry 82
