Find Ancestors

That 7 year old thread has actually proved very helpful to me. I'm in touch with the person who posted it. If it was about John Smith I can see that it would be pointless to resurrect it but with a name as unusual as Siggs there is a very high chance of a family link and I see no wrong in posting on it. I asked a question which could have been answered but no, was told to start my own thread and I'm grateful for the help I received there, but, as I've already said, with a name like Siggs it would prove useful, not just to me but to most people researching that name. But as I've exhausted the Siggs threads on here I promise not to resurrect any more 'out of date' posts. :-P

I was talking about complete threads Jude, not our individual comments which I know we can delete if we so wish.


I'm not in favour of people deleting their comments when they have helped someone (unless it is duplicate info) - it makes the thread look silly and renders it useless.


We had a phase a year or so back where some helpers were deleting what they had found if the poster didn't return within a day or so. Don't ask me why because I just can't see the point.



I have .......er......hundreds of threads in my threads box and there they will stay. :)

Kevin, we weren't telling you off, we were trying to help you - honestly!


You posted a request looking for Siggs' from Essex onto a thread which was 7 years old!


It was not connected to you at all, it was just a thread started by someone researching the name Siggs.


We simply tried to advise you of the fact that you were unlikely to get any help by posting on an old thread and that it would be better for you to start a thread of your own etc.....


Only the original poster or GR can remove threads by the way.

I know, they proved useful to me. But that didn't stop the self appointed forum police telling me off for posting on one. If they're useful, let's use them. If we aren't allowed to make use of them, delete them.

Then they probably weren't that interested ;-)

The first time I asked for help I sat looking at the screen waiting for a reply, pottered around the house - back to the screen. Still can't remember how I managed to find the replies that had been almost instant. I'm one of those people who never read quidelines. Genes is not an easy site to follow. Take the reply button - its at the bottom of the page yet the pm is clearly visible.

Perhaps if they studied the boards for a few days before they post they would see how the boards work or as already said read the guidelines.

It is not rocket science

If people have paid for membership they may think it's all part of the service. If you enjoy doing lookups, don't worry about it. If it does bother you then don't do the research. People really don't expect such quick responses. One sensible comment I've seen left somewhere is for threads to be deleted once solved. And really, I'd suggest that old threads be automatically deleted anyway. What's the point of having a 5 year old thread? (apart from the excitement that it apparently causes amongst the forum police when someone dares post on it )

They don't!


................ so no email, they think no response, so don't bother coming back.



We should be reminding all apparent new posters on the Boards to look at the My Threads to see if there have been new postings ........ as well as using My Threads to FIND their threads!

I know when you first join it's very difficult to work things out but quite often it's just pure ignorance and bad maners

Would be nice to see a thankyou now and again

For several years I have pm'd those who haven't responded to their threads.

I have enough time on my hands most days to be able to scroll through the previous day's threads and spot any 'non-returners' and so send them guidelines on how to find their replies.


Quite a lot are grateful as they hadn't a clue about how things work on here. (if they read the flippin' guidelines it would help!)


Some tell me they have seen the replies thank you...........they just haven't responded on the thread!!!!! Grrrr


And there are those who do not respond any which way!


Something about a horse and water springs to mind :-D

Why cann't people just be honest it they cann't come on for what ever reason fair enough we all have other priorities but then to lie about it just p****** me off

Been said so many times before.

I had one person that did not return to their thread for two weeks. Had a slightly offhand pm from this person saying that looking after their 2 kids was more important. Strange but this member had posted and added to many threads during that 2 weeks

I have genes which is more important ha ha

lol braken....I can imagine genealogy being a lot of people's sanctuary (when they can spend time doing it)

And hubby's/partners sometime worse than the kids/pets
