thank you Mike - I really appreciate that and understand the difference.

thanks Anne yes - those are what i had and armed with the Lancs info indicating Joseph was a widower when marring Margaret steele am assuming Mary Nicholson died. But not before they'd have at least 2 sons from what i can tell (john b1828 and William Nicholson Thompson b 1824).

My real interest is this entry.....

Adah Thompson Steele
gender: Female
baptism/christening date: 25 Apr 1832
baptism/christening place: Muncaster, Cumberland, England
mother's name: Margaret Steele

....as Ada Thompson is my definite fixture going back....(her marriage cert shows father as joseph thompson - gentleman) and perhps indicates a little fling to the side before things were put straight perhaps once mary had died.......

And until 30mins ago I'd spent 3 yrs tring to work out if Ada was connected to Joseph Thompson of Brankinwall (with wills from Kew) and thanks to that Lancs site ...as details above it does connect the dots....with that Jospeh, Margaret and then Adah.

I can find Thompson name associated with Brankenwell going back to 1604 (Hugo) . Somehow it seems around the 1830/40 time a few hundred years of thompsons owning Brakenwall stopped. Which gives me my next goal - why !

time for a drink- 3yrs !

" The Lancashire on line archive provides said marriage took place on 13 June 1822. " ....

No, it says 13th June was the date of the BOND.

Title : Marriage Bond (not marriage)

Marriage bonds and allegations only exist for couples who applied to marry by licence. They do not exist for couples who married by banns
The marriage allegation was the document in which the couple alleged (or frequently just the groom alleged on behalf of both of them) that there were no impediments to the marriage
The marriage bond set a financial penalty on the groom and his bondsman (usually a close friend or relative) in case the allegation should prove to be false

After 1823 marriage bonds were no longer made. Only the allegations were made after this date
The sum named on the bond was not the price of the marriage licence. It was the penalty sum, and was set deliberately high to deter irregular marriages

The existence of a marriage bond / allegation merely shows that a marriage licence was applied for. It does not prove that the couple ever married
Canon law stipulated that the marriage bond should state where the marriage should take place; sometimes a choice of two parishes in given. There are, however, occasions where couples seem to have disregarded this and married somewhere else entirely

Hi

Family search provides above marrying a J thompson 17 Jun 1822 in Muncaster.

The Lancashire on line archive provides said marriage took place on 13 June 1822.

Now same gent married a margeret steele same place on 20 april 1836 (accord to lancs site) but Family search gives it as 4 May 1836. Curiously Lancs site has a further marriage for them on 30/12/1835..same name details etc...

Why the difference and which is right? from what i can see the earlier dates are not banns.
