I have a William Henry Gregory born 1849 Nottingham married Bridget Gallagher born 1864 Canada in India 1878
They had a daughter Elizabeth born 1880 India
William died in Warrington 1889

Williams father was Samuel Gregory 1805- 1849 Nottingham
mother Mary Hall 1805

Is their anyway of finding out when they went to India I can't find them in 1851 their is another Samuel & Mary Nottingham 1851 but not the right family

Any suggestions !!

Just checked the 1851 census and yes it does look like them the other family was Ann not Mary

Thank you for that Vera as you say interesting pitty it didn't give more info about his family was hoping to find a bit more out about Bridget his wife,May be she was there with her family she was born in Canada ?? some one has her birth 1864 but she would only be 14 when she married

My gg grandmother was married out in India when she was about 13/14. Her first husband was a 28 year-old soldier who subsequently died of cholera.

I read somewhere that the Government stopped paying allowances to soldiers for any children over 13 years of age, so there was a rush to get the poor little devils married off!

On my other thread I was trying to find the Canadian Census for John & Margaret Gallagher this was found on the 1901 census

It was suggested on the other thread that the 1901 may not be the correct family. Here's the birth details from the 1901:

I'd suggest trying to work forward from what we know of John, Margaret and Maria. However, I've searched for ages and can't find anyone remotely suitable in the 1871 - it's possible they were already in India by then.
