Possibly John's service record, it's the correct regiment:

British Army Service Records 1760-1915 Transcription
First name(s): John
Last name: GALLAGHER
Calculated year of birth: 1839
Parish of birth: Saint Johns
Town of birth: Sligo
County of birth: Sligo
Age at attestation: 15 years
Attestation date: 25 October 1854
Attestation corps:
Attestation soldier number:
Discharge rank: Drummer << This fits the Canadian records.
Discharge corps: 17th Foot
Discharge soldier number: 3535

The National Archives reference: WO97 / 1964 / 36

Having had a look through the record he served in Malta, Crimea, North America and India. Doesn't have any next of kin, but pretty sure this is the right man, especially as he was discharged to Manchester.

Just trying to look at what I have I know the gregory family Finished up in Manchester and William died in Warrington and possibly the two families came back to Manchester
This service record shows John was from Ireland to corespond with the censuses you've found

Looking good from here

Sylann, I've just sent you the service records by pm - when you see where he served and that he was discharged to Manchester I think it's pretty certain it's the right man.

Good one, Marie Celeste! I'm sure you're right, I searched high and low in Canadian censuses for them with no luck.

Thank you for all your help

I'll have a look at the service record

You're welcome Sylvia - I love ones like this! I think we've circumnavigated the globe!

I've tried finding records for Margaret's family but no luck yet.

Think it's fair to say John Gallagher's military career was varied and interesting! Do come back with another challenge.
