Think it's fair to say John Gallagher's military career was varied and interesting! Do come back with another challenge.

You're welcome Sylvia - I love ones like this! I think we've circumnavigated the globe!

I've tried finding records for Margaret's family but no luck yet.

Sylann Report 31 Mar 2012 19:11

Good one, Marie Celeste! I'm sure you're right, I searched high and low in Canadian censuses for them with no luck.

MarieCeleste Report 31 Mar 2012 19:06

This 1901 seems to complete the circle:

WINDOWS, Christopher Head Married M 21 1880 Iron Moulder N K
WINDOWS, Elizabeth A Wife Married F 20 1881 India
GREGORY, Maria Mother-In-Law Widow F 37 1864 Tailoress Canada
GREGORY, Alice Sister-In-Law Single F 18 1883 Nail Maker Leicester Leicestershire
GREGORY, Fred Brother-In-Law Single M 16 1885 Wood Nose Maker Leicester Leicestershire
GREGORY, Florence Sister-In-Law Single F 14 1887 Cap Maker Leicester Leicestershire
GREGORY, Mary M Sister-In-Law Single F 12 1889 Warrington Lancashire
GALLEGHER, Joseph Uncle Single M 26 1875 Drummer 2nd Batt M/chster Regiment India

Registration District: Manchester
Civil Parish: Manchester

Address: 36, Elias Street, Manchester County: Lancashire

** I love Fred Gregory's occupation! (but it's sad that people would need them).

Sylann, I've just sent you the service records by pm - when you see where he served and that he was discharged to Manchester I think it's pretty certain it's the right man.

Sylann

Sylann Report 31 Mar 2012 18:48

Does look like him

Just trying to look at what I have I know the gregory family Finished up in Manchester and William died in Warrington and possibly the two families came back to Manchester
This service record shows John was from Ireland to corespond with the censuses you've found

Looking good from here

Possibly John's service record, it's the correct regiment:

British Army Service Records 1760-1915 Transcription
First name(s): John
Last name: GALLAGHER
Calculated year of birth: 1839
Parish of birth: Saint Johns
Town of birth: Sligo
County of birth: Sligo
Age at attestation: 15 years
Attestation date: 25 October 1854
Attestation corps:
Attestation soldier number:
Discharge rank: Drummer << This fits the Canadian records.
Discharge corps: 17th Foot
Discharge soldier number: 3535

The National Archives reference: WO97 / 1964 / 36

Having had a look through the record he served in Malta, Crimea, North America and India. Doesn't have any next of kin, but pretty sure this is the right man, especially as he was discharged to Manchester.

Sylann

Sylann Report 31 Mar 2012 18:38

That is very possible as the family did eventually finish up in Manchester

Thank you I'll have a good look at that

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 31 Mar 2012 18:33

Look at the grandaughter's surname in 1891!!

GREGORY, Mary Margaret Granddaughter F 2 1889 Warrington

** They seem to get a bit mixed up about where their children were born!

BUT, there's a chance this could be him in England in 1881:

GALLAGHER, John Head Married M 41 1840 Warehouse Porter Ireland

GALLAGHER, John Son Single M 15 1866 Apprentice Packing Warehouse Aldershot Hampshire

GALLAGHER, Patrick Son Single M 8 1873 Scholar India
GALLAGHER, James T Son Single M 6 1875 Scholar Bengal

The birth for James Thomas is also on FamilySearch. He was born Murree, Bengal - same place as Bridget Maria married. Is this a coincidence?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 31 Mar 2012 18:19

It was suggested on the other thread that the 1901 may not be the correct family. Here's the birth details from the 1901:

John born 9 Dec 1834 New Brunswick
Margaret b 9 Mar 1844 Prince Edward Island
Lily b 25 Dec 1880 New Brunswick
Gertrude b 28 Oct 1883 New Brunswick

I'd suggest trying to work forward from what we know of John, Margaret and Maria. However, I've searched for ages and can't find anyone remotely suitable in the 1871 - it's possible they were already in India by then.

Sylann

Sylann Report 31 Mar 2012 18:11

Sorry for the mix up

On my other thread I was trying to find the Canadian Census for John & Margaret Gallagher this was found on the 1901 census

John Gallagher 66
Margaret 57 born Ireland
Lily 20
Gertrude 17

If this is the right family their could be more children ?? as Bridget was born 1862

Is their any chance of finding this family in earlier censuses

MarieCeleste

New thread for John and Margaret in case anyone adds here and duplicates.
