I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to find the parents of Patrick Mckenna. According to his World War I record & Death Certificate (in my possession), he was born approximately February 1890 in Dungannon, Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Again, according to these records, his parents were Arthur McKenna & Margaret McQuigan. Patrick emigrated to Australia in 1902 and married Ethel Kirk at the end of World War I. My difficulty is that I can find no record of Arthur McKenna & margaret McGuigan in Northern Island. I realise the spelling may be different, but haven't found anything very close. I believe Patrick may have had 3 sisters, Rachel, Mary Anne & Margaret who emigrated to Australia before Patrick did. Rachel married a P. McCarthy in Australia and a McCarthy is listed as his "aunt" on his war record which is confusing. So far I have tried ancestry, familysearch & emeraldancestors. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Tania

What makes you think that Rachel, Mary Anne and Margaret were Patrick's sisters? If Rachel was noted as his aunt, then could it not be that the girtls were actually his father's sisters? If he didn't leave for Australia until 1902, then have you found him in 1901 Ireland census? Does he give Arthur as his father on his marriage certificate?

As Patrick would only have been 12 years old in 1902, have you found who was with him on his trip to Australia or did he travel on his own please?

Could the girls actually have been his cousins?
This census has three sisters with the names you have but not in Tyrone so could be a red herring.

Good morning! Apologies for my delay in adding back to this thread. It has been night-time here in Australia. I cannot find Patrick on the 1901 Irish Census, which is strange, because I am pretty sure he travelled at age 13 on the Duke of Norfolk in 1902, travelling from London to Townsville. I wonder if he was already in England perhaps. I cannot find any other family members on the ship.

Here are the details, as far as I know, about the 3 girls who might be related to Patrick McKenna.
Mary Ann Mckenna: According to her marriage certificate her parents were Patrick McKenna and Margaret McQuinn. She was born in Ireland in approximately 1873 and married Alexander Sommerville in Rockhampton (Queensland) in 1903. The witness on Mary Ann's marriage certificate in Rachel McKenna.
Rachel McKenna: According to her marriage certificate her parents were Arthur McKenna and Margaret McQuigan. She married Peter McCarthy in 1908 in Queensland. From her death certificate she was born in 1877 and arrived in Australia approximately 1897.
Margaret McKenna: According to her marriage certificate her parents were Laben McKenna and Margaret McQueen. She was born in Omah (near Dungannon) in approximately 1876.
Thank you Maura for that shipping record - that looks like it might be correct. I'll have a closer look.
As you can see, the 3 girls were born in the 1870s in Tyrone, so Patrick was much younger, and may well be a cousin or step-brother?? What do you think?

Thank you Maura. I believe that shipping record is correct, the "India" in 1895 carrying the 3 girls (? sisters) Maggie, Mary Ann & Rachel.
Still no luck with finding Patrick McKenna in Ireland though. The 1901 has a Patrick McKenna aged 11 staying with an aunt (Matilda) in Glenlark (Tyrone) but it is hard to confirm whether or not this might be him.
I think we can discount any McKennas found on the 1911 Census as I'm positive Patrick and the girls had all left by then.

I can't find Patrick or his (?) sisters on the above index. So far I have looked on the database through ancestry, emeraldancestors, familysearch as well as the records provided online through the Irish archives. Does anyone have any other suggestions for records from Tyrone? Many thanks

Thank you for your interest and assistance.
Regarding finding Patrick McKenna in the 1901 Census, I think the one mentioned about, nephew of Matilda McKenna is a definite possibility. There aren't many 12/13 year old Patrick McKenna's to choose from, and this one seems to disappear before the 1911 census, which fits with him leaving for Australia, presumably to join his much older sisters (or half-sisters, cousins?)
As to the parents names, I remain confused. To recap Mary Ann Mckenna (b 1873) daughter of Patrick McKenna and Margaret McQuinn Rachel McKenna (b Dungannon 1877) daughter of Arthur McKenna and Margaret McQuigan Margaret McKenna (b Omah 1876) daughter of Laben McKenna and Margaret McQueen
The 3 girls travelled on the "India" to Mackay in 1895 and descendants with whom I have made contact believe they were sisters (although they don't know any more than what I have explained already).
Thank you Joy for the cousinconnect reference. I'll have a look.

Thanks Maura
That's very strange that there is another Patrick McKenna who died in 1925 Queensland with the same parents as my Patrick McKenna who definitely died in 1961
I wonder if my Patrick McKenna may have been the illegitimate son of one of the girls (Rachel, Margaret, Mary) and he was raised by his grandparents or other family members, believing Arthur McKenna and Margaret McGuigan / McGuggan to be his parents?
Is that record you found in the Qld BMD Maura? I'll check it out
Thanks for the Tyrone gravestone information too. Very interesting. I wonder if I can connect them in?
