I didn't think so many people would take so much time & trouble to find the things that you have. Thank you all very much it was so good of you.
Having studied the information it seems as if there could be two Stanley Dare's
one born about 1880 the other birth calculated as 1888 [both dates shown on army records] & they appear to have joined three different regiments between 1906-1915. Today I contacted Staffordshire B.M.D.Rocords to try again to find either or both birth certificates, guess what ? "Today being MONDAY ???? the office is closed". I must get a new calendar, so I'll have to try again tommorrow Tuesday.
I am sure that Pte. Dare. Stanley. Service No 2312 in the 7th Highland Light Infantry is the the man I am researching as the three children named are his children that i knew. His next of kin should have been Elizabeth Dare Nee Jeffries, i wonder who Polly was ?
It is still a mystery as to why no birth record can be found & both dates are shown as being in the Hanley, Staffordshire area & how did he escape being on a census for thirty years ? I have sent off for his Highland L.I. records

Brian - if there were two Stanley Dares, how come they both had identical tattoos according to their service records? (Sylvia mentioned this previously).

It's possible that it's the same man but there was ambiguity (for whatever reason) about his birth year.

Stanley Dare only appears on the 1911 census born 1879 Hanley, Staffs.
So when in 1906 he joined the Lancs Fusiliers he is shown as being 18 years 2 months Attested 31 Aug 1906 & then he joined The Kings Own [R.L.] reg't 22 Dec 1906 attested he was 18 years 3 months this would give his D.O.B 1188
When he joined the Highland Light Infantry Attested 5/9/1914 it is stated that his year of birth was 1880 & his age was 34 Years & he had 3 Chidren born 1910,1911,1912. When he died he was 60Year old that was in 1938 this points to him being bornin 1879/80. So far I only have medal card for H.L.I.saying he was medically discharged 13/3/1915 & my Genes Member ship expires in a few days & I don't think I will be renewing it. So thanks for your help. Would you believe it ? yet another error as occured just as i tried to send this.

Brian on the 1st army records Polly Ball is his elder sister in Glasgow.

did you note that witnesses to his marriage are a Mrs Wheatley and William Newman.

The fact that the Dare family dos'nt seem to appear on census very often may indicate that they are Traveling / Hawker / Gypsy families , they dont seem to record births and marriages very often.

I did find this family in Scotland Glasgow 1911 another case of find them if you can !!!!!

Mavis , Thanks for this information, I am not aware of the first army records so I have not looked at this site.
Reaney [correct spelling] Elizabeth was Stanley's daughter who was born in Atcham, Salop 28/11/1911 which makes it odd that he has the tattoo in 1906.
The 1906 army records show him

4mths pass but he only ages by 1 mth ?
Joining the 7Th Highland Light Infantry in 1914 he was aged 34yr old birth about 1880. I am awaiting his Birth certificate from Stoke On Trent & a marriage Certificate from Newark, Notts. but not having his parents names is making it hard for them to find. Brian, don't get too hung up about exact ages - it's surprising how many people didn't know their exact birth details, poor literacy was often to blame.

Back to that tattoo - on both the 1906 and 1914 attestations it is described exactly the same, a heart and clasped hands with "True Love Reaney". That doesn't sound to me like a tattoo you'd have done in respect of your mother or daughter, it seems more like a sweetheart thing.

Perhaps daughter Reaney was named after this sweetheart? (Stranger things have happened).

I don't suppose anyone can read that name and address that's been crossed out on his 1914 papers?
Looks maybe like Mrs. Monighan or something....?

His tattoos are quite interesting. What's with the Stars and stripes and eagle???

Think the Harry Dare in Aston was father of Harry Dare who owned a firm of builders in Birmingham. It was a big company & they built a lot of the pre war semis in various areas of the city.
My mother worked for them in the mis 1930s when she left school.

Heart & Crossed Hands - True Love Reaney.....would indicate a romance

LadyKira's Reaney looks very promising with the Scottish connection

What about the Thistle & Shamrock?

Is there an Irish connection too.... I know Stanley was in the highlanders
and maybe that would explain the thistle but the shamrock?

Maybe someone who knows more about regimental insignia or tattoos would be able to explain why a person would choose both unless there is a connection to both areas
