Thanks Chris. Yes once we knew how they fitted into the family, it was easy to find. But what we didn't know at the time was that Grace's father had married again, and that she was my My GGAunt Harriett's step daughter (Mum's step 2nd cousin). I will cross check my data and fill in anything extra you have added :-D

Much belated, but some answers to this thread.
Thanks to a long lost family member making contact, we have solved some puzzles.
Grace Kemp was the daughter of John Town form his first marriage. Her daughter was also called Grace, and to avoid confusion, she was called Aunt Bettie. They lived in Kent, and their property back onto their neighbours...the Osbournes, who became life long family friends. The children called Mrs. Osborne Aunt Beattie, though no relation. Beattie's 2 daughters were the bridesmaids at my Grandmothers wedding.
Thankyou again for all of your help.

No luck finding any marriages, and wondering if there was another daughter called Beatrice perhaps. Charles Kemp passed away after Grace B, and doubt a divorce and remarriage. Another mystery!

Shirley, I just spoke to mum and asked her if she remembered an aunt Beattie. She said oh of course. That was the Kemp family that lived in Kent, but had no idea how they were connected.
She does remember that Beattie was surnamed Osborne, so Grace the daughter must have married into that name. I recall a photo of her backyard with some lads in it just before going off to war.
So happy to say we have the correct family, and another puzzle is solved!
Thankyou so much for your great help.

Rotherhithe and Deptford are on the south of the River Thames and next door boroughs only about a mile apart . Walthamstow is East London though. about 12.7 miles from Rotherhithe so not that far away

It would seem that he didn't really know where he was born and maybe thought it was where the family last lived. Sometimes the enumerator would ask where are you from rather than where born, so the answer would be where they had moved from .

Lots of my fathers family were from Deptford and Rotherhithe. they started in Rotherhithe and moved to Deptford areas

A query, because of course I've got all excited and not followed the cardinal rules..but it does look like we have found John.......
However, John was recorded being born..
1861 Rotherlithe
1871 Rotherlithe
1891 Deptford
1901 Walthamstow

Are all of these places relatively close together?

Oh could well be..making it C and B. K And I am positive mum has mentioned an Aunt Beattie..and also mentioned a holiday in Kent???? How interesting.

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 19 Apr 2012 17:24

well she was Grace Beatrice maybe the B is her and she was known as Beatrice or Beatie

Wendy

Wendy Report 19 Apr 2012 17:21

Wishful thinking on my part I think. The G could well be a C..very flourished. But the last initial - K is most definite. I am almost certain it is a picture of Mr and Mrs Kemp ( which ones unknown).

maybe he was just called BIll. I have family that didnt go by their birth names and some whose deaths were reg in the name they were known as rather than their birth name

Wendy

Wendy Report 19 Apr 2012 16:53

The age would fit Grace, but the "B"? In the ideal world his real name or middle name is William and everyone called him Uncle Bill ;-)

Found it! Christmas Day 1937. A couple in their 50's? (so hard to tell). Signed what appears to be a G and B. K Someone has written on the other end Kemp and some numbers.
