Hollie I used to go to college 10years or so ago with a chap called Ted Rudge who is quite an expert on Romany gypsies. If you Google Ted Rudge, Romany gypsies it brings up several options including a site that you can join & books that Ted has written. Sorry, don't have any other info but I'msure Ted will be pleased to hear from you. Hope this is useful

Wildchild: Yea, but I'm concerned iv found the wrong person.
The girl who i found all the details seemed to match but the only inconsistency was the place of birth. could the census have got it wrong?? or cos of the fact the girl was a servant the head of the house she was working in may have got her birthplace wrong? Also the family that she was a servant for are meant to have been Jewish but they don't have a particularly jewish name. I also contacted a direct descendant of her of the family to ask a few questions but they haven't replied which is a shame.
Thankyou Elizabeth and Quoy, ill defo take a look ad keep yoou updated! :)

The birth certificate will only give the address wherethe child was born. Have you looked for the mother on the census beforethe birth date?

There are 2 on line sites which I have found very useful in tracing my DIL Romany family
"Romany Genes" and "Romany jib"
Lots of Bucklands and Smiths - once you are sure of the line you need to follow :-)

Mine are mostly Clapham, Battersea & then moved to Fulham & their surname is Lee..... I might also have a Buckland in my tree & according to the census she was from Windsor.......I haven't been able to prove she is the right lady cos i can't find births for the children but i am 99% sure it's the right family cos of 1 of the girls names, like you say they carry names down & my Nan's Sister had this name for her middle 1

Ah! Great! thank you!
1 last thing then ill give u guys a break lol..
This is about the other side of my family tree...
My Great Great Grandmother was an illegitimate child born in an unmarried mothers home in the east end.
There is speculation as to who her father is as story has always told it to be a young Jewish boy who's house her mother worked in a servant.
As nobody in our family has ever seen her birth cert we don't know if the fathers name is on it or not.
If it wasn't on it, would it have the residential address her mother would have lived at at the time she got pregnant (lived in before she went the the unmarried mothers home/hospital?)? Therefore the address of the house she was a servant at?
Many thanks

Hi Hollie. Realised you are new to this. It´s so easy to get excited & carried away when someone gives you information that sounds right, but to be sure you have the right family you need as much proof as possible. You can order Noah´s birth cert using the reference number that Julie has given you. That will give you his date of birth, his father´s name & occupation, his mother´s name & the address where he was born. Once you have that info, you can start checking back through the censuses & confirm whether the other info you have been given on here is your family. If you get stuck, come back to this thread. There´s always someone around who can help & advise. Good luck.

sorry guys. I'm new to this and very inexperienced, hence why I'm posting on these boards for tips and advice.
I am after knowing Elizas maiden name but you're right I'm not sure they married 'officially' especially all those years ago.
When i look up birth records it says that you it doesn't show mothers maiden name before 1912.
Would it be that id have to order the birth cert for Noah to obtain Elizas maiden name?

Julie. I did suggest that to Hollie yesterday at 14.20. Think she needs to slow down & take things a bit more methodically. It´s always a temptation to take info other people have offered, especially when you´re just starting out.

What makes you so sure they did marry......& if they did then it might not be registered, that is something that some Gypies never did
There is Noah's birth that will give you his mmn
Births Sep 1895 (>99%) Buckland Noah Wallingford 2c 316

Hollie. The surname Smith for Eliza was only a suggestion. Before you start tracing the Smith family, you really need to get a birth certificate for one of Noah & Eliza´s children. This will confirm Eliza´s maiden name.

names are usually passed down. is there an eliza listed in the smith family of any age or a lottie (someone who she may have named her daughter after)? I can't find them on the 1871 census.
Thankyou for helping me :-)

Just to add. 1871 shows Abraham & Emily & family including Noah aged 1 in Abingdon. They are living in the same place as a James Smith & family. Could this be Eliza´s parents?

Eliza could have been a Smith (a Romany surname) There are 2 Buckland children registered 1913 & 1914 in Witney with mother´s maiden name Smith. Emily 2nd quarter 1913 Witney (after her grandmother?) Squire O (possibly Owen ) 4th quarter 1914 Witney. In 1901 as I said, Noah´s parents & 2 sisters are registered on the same page. Looking much more likely that Lottie was born before the marriage although being Romanies it´s highly likely that they were never formally married but went through a Romany ceremony. Might be worth looking for a formal marriage between Noah´s parents Abraham & Emily.

Thankyou wisechild.
I don't know why lottie isn't on it either.
I have just found Noah living in 'Caravan on cricket field' Woodstock, oxfordshire, in the parish of Cassington with his family aged 18 on the 1891 census.
Noah and Eliza had their first child lottie in 1893.
so i reckon they got married between 1891 & 1893.
just tried looking in free bmd but it won't let me view the pages.
I also wondered if there may have been any other caravans in 'the cricket field' as gypsies usually travel in groups. Eliza may have been in that group.
Lottie was listed in the 1911 census as being born in surrey. so between 1891 and 1893 Noah met Eliza and married her got her pregnant and had lottie and moved from oxford to surrey.
They didn't hang around much! lol
