Find Ancestors

Please can anyone help find a birth for Thomas GLADWIN born roughly 1844-1846 according to censuses. On his RM records he gives his birth as 3 April 1844 Burton upon Trent.

I have him on all censuses from 1861 (when he is on board H.M.S. Neptune in Malta) to 1911, all say he was born in Burton-Upon-Trent Staffs.

His father was also Thomas GLADWIN and we think maybe a merchant seaman. There may be a link to Wexford in Ireland.

Armed services births and births at sea have been checked to no avail.

The Thomas Gladwin born 1843 in Bakewell Derbys is not the correct one.

Hi Ann, I have looked at the Staffs bmds and no results coming up between 1837 and 1847.

Derek that sounds like the right one. How did you find that. Many thanks for any info that you have.

As Derek seems to be busy and hasn't returned. If anyone can find what he found and give me the refs I would be very grateful thank you.

The familysearch entry is only a submitted one , not extracted from parish records so ttreat with caution.

Strangely on one census he gives place of birth as Littleover Derbys but can't find it under Derbyshire in FreeBMD either. (checked free BMD on Ancestry as well.

Do you know for sure he was born Gladwin ?

There's a possibilty his mother married/ remarried and changed his name.

Just a thought.

Who is he living with on the early censuses you've found him on ?

-Is this the same Thomas Gladwin ?
Why would his birthplace change so precisely.

Pretty certain he was born Gladwin, from his marriage cert his father was also Thomas Gladwin R Marine like him. In 1861 he is on board ship, in the remainder he is with his wife Margaret Julia and his family. He is missing in the 1851, He may have been in Ireland as we think his father came from wexford.

Yes, that is him. I don't know but they often made mistakes and Littleover is not very far from Upton. Maybe he was born in Upton and they actually lived in Littleover.

Although I have had a lot of help from Mike, Neither of us have come up with the refs to enable me to get a birth certificate. Derek did say that he had the records to follow up what he'd found so i am wondering if he also had the refs. I am adding to this in the hope that Derek may find time to emerge fro Derbyshire and tell me what he has. Thanks derek if you have time.

I have the Merchant Navy docs for Thomas Gladwin senior but nothing for his son. How much does that cert cost? I don't have FMP.
