The Webber family is the one i originally started out with but ruled it out because Doris Owens was their child born in 1930 and because i had the electoral register checked for 1947 at 781 Atherton Road Hindley Wigan and Doris Owens is on it It cant be her because she would only have been 17 and not old enough to be on it I also checked the 1946 and 1948 for the same address and only Mary J Mather is there in those years so she only lived with her for the year of pregnancy. I am pinning my hopes on it being Doris Owens born 11 th February 1925 in Gatley stockport Cheshire The Daughter of Clifford Gladstone Owens and Doris Measures Doris Measures died 3 days after the child was born At the time of birth they were living at Ivy Cottage HospitalLane Stockport I have also just found out that Clifford Gladstone Owens re-married 2 years after his first wife died to Evaline Chester (Fathers name Henry Chester ) a Plumber Another interesting thing camet To light on the second marriage certificate with Cliffords address given as 31 Frances St Cheadle and Evaline Chester address given as Ivy Cottage Hospital Lane So who was 2 year old Doris with then? The other "clue" i am looking at is the marriage of this Doris owens to David Selwyn Birch in 1951 where her occupation is given as Health Visitor a close match to the Student Nurse occupation on Doris owens at 781 Atherton Road Wigan in 1947 when she had a child Did she give up the Student Nurse and later followedthe path to Health Visitor? Oh I wish i could solve this Keep up the good work Thanks and Thanks again Pam

Pamela, just to say that she would have had to be a registered nurse in order to train as a health visitor, so that sounds really promising. There can't have been too many RN's called Doris Owens in the area surely!

You mentioned Valerie's husband doing his Seddon tree, well William Prescott married or not married to Jane mother of Alice Webber 1895 who married Thomas Owens,he was with Thomas Seddon born @ 1810.his Uncle in 1871 census.

Do I take now we are not looking for Doris Owens mmn Webber.

Doris Owens mmn Measures would have been 21 in 1946 if she was born 1925 so would have qualified to vote in 1947

brummiejan Report 9 Jul 2012 13:23

I can't remember if you have said, but have you tracked that 1947 address back, as far as possible - I know the war years are unavailable? Just wondering if previous occupants hold any clues. Remember Doris might have been there before but not quite old enough to vote.
The 1925 Doris would fit nicely as she had to qualify as a nurse before she could become a health visitor. A large number of nurses back then would have done a 1-year post-registration course to qualify as a midwife, and if planning a health visiting career this would have been pretty much essential.

Hi again sorry for confusion over Doris Owens MMN Measures meant to say MMN Webber is not right one cos Doris Owens born 1930 But the Doris Owens MMN Measures is the one I am holding out as to being the right one I have tracked the 781 Atherton Road address and Mary J Mather lived there for 40 + years with her husband Walter Mather as he was a Postman and this address was a sub post office Walter Mather died in 1945 The electoral register for 1946 has Mary J Mather living there on her own and again on her own in 1948 It is only in 1947 that Doris Owens appears and I wouldnt have thought she wouild live with acomplete stranger ? Doris Owens Daughter of Clifford Gladstone Owens and the one I hope is right one was living back with him in 1948 I beleive the family of Mary J Mather hold the answer I need Thanks for all your hard work and sorry for confusing Measures and Webber Pam

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 9 Jul 2012 15:48

I'm confused now! I took it to mean that Doris Owens (Daughter of Clifford) born 1925 married Selwyn Birch, and her occupation was a health visitor when she married? Or is that wrong?
I wasn't considering Doris MMN Webber at all.

Pamela Report 9 Jul 2012 16:08

Yes that is right. My earlier posts refer to Doris Owens (MMN Webber ) and i ruled her out because born 1930 as some other researches thought she would be the right one

To confirm Doris Owens Daughter of Clifford Gladstone Owens was born on 11th Feb 1925 and her mum Doris Measures died 3 days after she was born on 14th Feb Clifford re-maried in 1927 to Evaline Chester Doris married David Selwyn Birch in 1951 and was a Health Visitor on the marriage certificate which fits nicely with student nurse in 1947 I beleive this is the right one but need more proof for my search Thanks again Pam
Thank you for your patience and time and sorry for confusion
