Rule out the births with mothers maiden name of Reed as that Sheila married someone else in 1955 and not Lewis

What names do you have on an actual document? How do you know anything at all? Please answer questions, we are trying to help you.
It is important to get solid facts - you can't move on until you do.

Had a look at that Sherriff family

All those Rogers births listed are on FreeBMD with mothers maiden name of Field

i.e Ella 1924, Joan in 1926 and a possible for Ernest but in 1932

Plus they are not born in Devon - but listed as West Ham

I would ignore that at the moment

So it is back to what evidence do you actually have

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 28 Jun 2012 00:45

Going back to that Sherriff family tree

This would be the marriage

Marriages Mar 1924 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Field Alicia Rogers W.Ham 4a 124
Haunton Clarence W Pickanoe W.Ham 4a 124
PICKANCE Elizabeth S B Haunton W. Ham 4a 124
Rogers Ernest W J L Field W.Ham 4a 124

So that surely rules this couple out as being the parents of your Ernest if he was born 1915

Also this birth means he could not be the father of your Ernest
Births Mar 1903 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rogers Ernest William J L W. Ham 4a 98

1911 census gives his full name
Ernest William John Lear Rogers

Name: Ernest William J L Rogers
Birth Date: 17 Jan 1903
Date of Registration: Aug 1992
Age at Death: 89
Registration district: Redbridge
Inferred County: Essex
Volume: 14
Page: 1192

Name: Alicia Rogers
Birth Date: abt 1904
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1952
Age at Death: 48
Registration district: Ilford
Inferred County: Essex
Volume: 5a
Page: 228

Name: Alicia Rogers
Probate Date: 17 Sep 1952
Death Date: 13 Aug 1952
Death Place: Essex, England
Registry: London, England

That family stayed in the Essex so would rule out that Sherriff tree if you are certain that Ernest was born in Devon

jax Report 28 Jun 2012 01:31

If your father was Ernest Harry Rogers who died in 1990 I would get his death cert to see who registered it

Marriages Dec 1942 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reed Violet S M Rogers Plympton 5b 571
Rogers Ernest H Reed Plympton 5b 571

Violet remarried in 1948

Marriages Mar 1948 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reed Violet S M Vincent Plymouth 7a 1362
Rogers Violet S M Vincent Plymouth 7a 1362
Vincent William L T Rogers Plymouth 7a 1362
Vincent William L T Reed Plymouth 7a 1362

The only other marriage in Devon for an Ernest H was in 1977 which could also be him as the possable spouse was born 1920s or before so I doubt they had children

Don't just type names in google and make assumptions about the results.

Get some documentary EVIDENCE.

You don't, at present, even seem to know the actual name of this man who you say was your father.

You started by saying he was Ernest J - then, when suggestions were made about possible records, you said he was 'Harry'

I doubt, somehow, that he was named on your birth cert - so there's probably no way of getting proof

I asked a simple question re my first message.. I would not write anything if i was not sure you all seem rather aggressive and suspicious that im messing about.. sorry I asked..

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 28 Jun 2012 10:39

We are not being aggressive Junie, but as you are trying - understandably - to find your father, the first thing you need to do is pin down his exact name if possible.
All records are online as you know, and there is no birth showing up which matches what info you originally gave, so the query wasn't all that simple!
If we seem fed up, it's just that you aren't answering the questions posed, so people are finding it difficult to make progress. We are very willing to help, but need some feedback.

You don't, at present, even seem to know the actual name of this man who you say was your father. BELIEVE ME HE WAS MY FATHER.

You started by saying he was Ernest J - then, when suggestions were made about possible records, you said he was 'Harry' i SAID HE WAS KNOWN AS HARRY BY EVERYONE IN THE SMALL COMMUNITY

I doubt, somehow, that he was named on your birth cert - so there's probably no way of getting proof HE WASNT HE RAN AWAY WHEN HE KNEW MY MOTHER WAS HAVING ME! ERNEST HARRY, HARRY ERNEST WHATEVER HE WISHED TO CALL HIMSELF LIVED IN HOLBETON AND ALWAYS LIVED IN HOLBETON UNTIL HE MARRIED AND DIED IN PLYMPTON.. <<< FACTS

Junie, just another avenue to explore.
Do you by any chance know exactly where he lived? (Don't put on here obviously!).
If you have an address, you might try checking out the electoral register to see who was living there, and the name recorded.
I am sure your mother knew the name he used, but he might have been a little 'flexible' with his name it seems!!

Sorry you feel we have been - rather aggressive and suspicious

Questions have to be asked to try and help the best way we can.

I still think the Sherriff tree that you keep referring back to can not possibly be the right Ernest. Nothing seems to match with location etcs.

Google can be a useful tool but any info found that way has to be checked.

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 28 Jun 2012 13:14

Junie has sent me a PM.
In short, she is pretty sure the Ernest Harry death in 1990 is hers. She is checking out newspapers for an announcement. I have suggested she gets the death cert.
It seems she knows where he lived, so I have also suggested a search of the electoral registers. to see who else was living there, and hopefully to confirm his name. She is not local however so will have to ask staff to look for her.

Hopefully the poster will come back and update info when death cert has been received.

If the right man then the Sherriff tree is not her relative
