Robert, I'm surprised that you say you THINK you will TRY to get a copy of the marriage certificate. I think it's absolutely essential that you do, unless, of course, a relative has her birth certificate. If you can get her father's name we could find them on a census.

Robert

Robert Report 4 Jul 2012 15:58

Having spoken with a relative last night, she remembers Catherin Flannigan having a Yorkshire accent, so I will be going with her being born in Leeds. I also learned that she was buried at Killingbeck cemetry, which could be helpful. My aunt is going to ring round some other family members who may/may not have a birth certificate, who should be getting in touch. In the meantime, I think I will try and get a copy of the marriage certificate. Thanks for all your suggestions so far!! :-D :-D :-D

Robert, the marriage certificate should be your first step as information from family can, unintentionally, be unreliable. For example when I was a child I believed my maternal grandmother to have been born in Ireland. In fact she was born in Scotland of Irish parents (who had met and married in Scotland). She had lived in Ireland for about 10 years with her parents but had returned to Scotland after they died.

Possibly she was born in Leeds?

Repeat: you have to get marriage certificate to get father's name.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 3 Jul 2012 20:26

There are 7 Halliday births with mother's maiden name Flanagan born Leeds between 1919-1928 on FreeBMD. It looks like 2 of them are twins. Are they yours?

I agree with MarieCeleste, you have to get that marriage certificate to find father's name.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 3 Jul 2012 20:04

Robert, do you have her marriage certificate which should have her father's name on (if she knew him)?

If not, then order a copy from GRO http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Robert

Robert Report 3 Jul 2012 19:40

She married in Leeds in 1914, that I know, and I know she was born 11/4/1895, and died 29/04/1985 in Leeds. I have been told she came from Ireland, but my recent visit to Ireland raised more questions than answers. I will be speaking to a relative soon, whom, if I ask the correct questions, might give me the correct answers. :-S

Robert Report 3 Jul 2012 16:28

I'm trying to find the family of my great grandmother Catherine Flannigan, and am having little joy. I have tried asking family members who knew her better, and they seem to remember her having a sister called Annie(could be Anne/Ann) and another sister called Mary, and maybe even a brother called Dominic. Catherine Flannigan's married name was Halliday, I know she was born in 1895, and died 1985.
I have also been told that she was born in Ireland, but having just come back from Dublin trying to find this out, a number of possibilities have been thrown up, one being that she may have been born in Ireland, but was never registered, and secondly, that she may not have been born there at all, but with the surname Flannigan, could just be or Irish descent.
So, If anyone can help, any information would be good. :-D
