Thanks for the update Sarah.

Solar Report 2 Aug 2012 19:59

An update for those of you who kindly helped me with this one.
I have had it confirmed by another member of Genes, that Rachel was indeed married to Richard first, when he then died in 1838 she went onto to live with Richard's younger brother George and they then went onto have a family together. Details confirmed from one of their children's birth certificate where Rachel states her maiden name and Ockwell and then Hambidge widow etc.
So case seems to be resolved.
Many thanks to all those who kindly helped me, much appreciated. :-)

does indeed seem a likely match, also ages tie in.

Richard dying aged 35 in 1838 is good match for Richard baptised 1803 son of John and Ann, seems likely to be the same chap.

Solar Report 30 Jul 2012 15:51

Yes that could be a possibility. Also if this is Richard's death in 1838 this woud tie in well with the 1841 census, where Rachel is living with her four children Maria 11, Isaiag? 6, Sarah 3 and James 6 months - possibly after this she started a relationship with George or even around the time Sarah was born so possibly her first two children were with Richard and then all of the others with George?
Many thanks, Sarah

Which makes baby James aged 6 months in census 1841 VERY posthumous...

Richard Hambidge may have married both Rachels, Newman in 1825, and Ockwell in 1829, as posted earlier, if this is the death of Rachel nee Newman.

However, just to muddy the waters, Richard appears to have married a Rachel NEWMAN.

Oh Wow - big thankyous

From the 1841 census I can't see George had a brother called, Richard, who was living at home anyway. Need to see if I can find Richard on the 1841 census report and then also if there is a marriage between Rachel Ockwell and Richard. Also if there is a death record for Richard.

So much help, very grateful to all

If Rachel were married to George's brother, it would have been illegal at that time for her to marry her deceased husband's brother, which could account for the lack of a marriage between Rachel and George.

Such marriages, although they often took place, were illegal before the passing of the Deceased Brother’s Widow’s Marriage Act, 1921.

I think you were correct in thinking that Rachel was married to George's brother, became a widow and went on to have children with George. Not an uncommon scenario.

Yep, sorry just seen that now. Thanks for all your help.
Maybe George and Rachael were actually related and their children , joint or otherwise all ended up living together. Strange

Thanks for that, getting more confused by the min.
Does it mention the father George Hambidge on the 1841 census anyway?
He was born 1810
Many thanks

Confusing. This seems to suggest her maiden name was Ockwell:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ruffle/Individual-List/ListIndividualsH.htm

On Family Search it does look as though she married a Richard Hambidge (variant spellings).
