Hi Jax
thankyou for your help. that is definately Ada's marriage and she had my Dad leonard under her maiden name Weaver in 1937 and a daughter Jessie under Thomson born in 1939, same quarter as the marriage but Im not sure about any other children in 1942. it is possible though and wrth looking into. Ada was born in London St Lukes I believe, and was most likely 42 when she married....I remember she seemed older when I was young in England and then we emigrated to Australia in 1969 and never saw her again. I think she most likely stayed around London or possibly Bournemouth where Jessie married...and Im afraid thats all I really know. I was so hoping I would be able to find something about her death, when and where and possible circumstances. I have also been trying to locate Jessie but no luck.

thanks again
Penny

thankyou for the time you have spent on tracng my relative Ada. My dad had told me that his mum (Ada) was born in London St lukes and that is all the info that he has...so yes...I did look at the 1901 census as my source of information but then got a bit confused with the 1911 because as far as I know, Ada did not have a middle name. all a bit of a mystery. and still unable to find her death.

What was the name of Ada's father from the marriage certificate?
Age at marriage, occupations, witnesses?
Thank-you.

I certainly think the two censuses are the same family Patchem.

Penny do you have a birth for Jessie because I can't find one

the information I have regarding Ada Weaver's marriage is not from her marriage certtificate but from files sent to my father from Children's home authorities in London as he was placed in a home and only saw his mum and step father periodically. it states that she married Joseph Thomson in 1939 and had Jessie that same year. jessie's birth was in the last quarter in the District of Lambeth Vol. 1d page 255.which i found through the search on gens reunited. the surname looks as if it has been partly handwritten and Jessie has middle initials of S.A. My dad was born in 1937. i have never requested any certificates before and am not sure how to go about it. perhaps it is time to acquire the marriage certificate, but live in Australia....any suggestions?? and how much are they? I feel that I have a sense of urgency now as my dad is quite frail and I am trying to piece things together for him....thankyou everyone

Found it...it's 1d 235 and it's transcribed as Thomsett but Thomson is handwritten (so I guess there are quite a few transcribed incorrectly!

Mother's Maiden Surname: Weaver

If the Bournemouth marriage for Jessie is right, they are on 192.com and in the phone book - I'll PM the details.

Also think that birth in 1942 mentioned earlier by Jax could be worth checking out - can't see another Thomson/Weaver marriage local to the area to explain it.

I have been tracking the family through London Electoral rolls

1945 Joseph S and Ada Thomson -- Newington Butts

1950 ? Joseph and Ada Thomson -- 73 Aytoun Road - Brixton

1956 ? Joseph and Ada Thomson -- 45 Denbigh Street - Westminster

Is there any idea as to where they may have lived in London, was Leonard known as Weaver or Thomson

cant track Joseph as Joseph S because another one is married to a Rose M in the same area , but it looks as if he dropped the S

So who was Ada?

The Annie Ellen in 1911 with father James William is definitely the Annie Ellen who marries Ernest Nottingham (father James William works in a stationer's office).

It seems unlikely that Jas W with wife Alice born Ireland son James that matches and daughter Ada whose birth year matches is not the same family. Can't make out the occupation but it is something in office

But where was Annie Ellen in 1901,and where is Ada in 1911 if that is true?

So to get Ada's marriage certificate to Joseph Thomson to check on father's name and occupation is vital

Annie Ellen and Ernest seem to have returned to his native north east . He died there in 1957 and she in 1973

The 1901 occupation is housekeeper ofice I think

Leonard ( my dad) was and always has been Weaver. He was born before Ada met Joseph. my dad was in children's homes most of his life as both of them moved around a lot as times were tough. they lived in a lot of different places but usually around london. I am going to request a copy of their marriage certificate but will take a while as has to come to Australia. I agree that the census are a bit confusing as I am fairly sure that my Ada is not Annie. She....as far as I know has never been known as anything but Ada. thanks so much everyone :-)

If you're ordering the marriage cert it may be worth getting the 1942 birth as well, your father may have a half brother as well as the sister you already know about.

When I answered your message about Jessie, I forgot to mention some London ER's are on Ancestry, that is where Mavis got her info, but they only go to early 1960s and you had to be 21 to vote, so the chid or children would not show up.

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 26 Aug 2012 12:40

No Penny I agree with you that Ada and Annie Ellen are not one and the same person. But I am convinced that the family is the correct one. So where was Annie Ellen in 1901 and where is Ada in 1911. Quite simply there is not the option as far as I can tell that we have two separate families....it would be an enormous coincidence for there to be two James W born in Bow and two Alices born in Ireland to be two separate couples. Add to that they each had a son James born in 1890 :-S

Flip Report 26 Aug 2012 12:47

After re-reading your posts have just realised, you based the year of birth for Ada on the 1901 census you found - so we have no way of knowing if this is correct. She could have been born much later and not be on any census.

I thought she seemed a bit old to have her first child in 1937 (although not impossible), and lets face it, when we were young everyone seemed old!!

The marriage certificate will give an age for both her and husband, so we may be able to get a bit further with birth and death once we know that. Get in touch with Jessie, you've nothing to loose, and if she's the right one she may be able to give you the info you are looking for.
