Here's her probate:

England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966
Name: Margaret Maria Bygate
Probate Date: 13 Sep 1859
Death Date: 9 Apr 1857
Death Place: Yorkshire, England
Registry: Wakefield

Letters of administration given to her husband Edwin Bygate. (Probably not the best person given his later bankruptcy!) Effects under £200

Sadly, she died:

Leeds Intelligencer - Saturday 18 April 1857
DEATHS

On 10th inst., aged 25, Margaret Maria, wife of Mr Edwin Bygate, Churchfield House, Barnsley and eldest daughter of the late Rev RL Armstrong of Wortley, near Leeds.

So when Edwin married her sister he should have stated widower but the record definitely says bachelor. Didn't waste much time, did he?

Have found something!

Manchester Times - Saturday 30 August 1856
"Marriages"

BYGATE - ARMSTRONG. On the 23rd inst, at Marshall Street Chapel, Holbeck by the Rev J H Morgan, Mr Edwin Bygate of Churchfield House, Barnsley, to Margaret Maria, eldest daughter of the late Rev R L Armstrong of Moor Cottage, Wortley.

So what on earth happened? Annulment, as I suggested earlier?

Will keep digging.

when i searched on ancestry for margaret it has all the info month year place but no name i think ur right and buying the cert is the only way to find out for sure

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 7 Sep 2012 19:41

James, there's nothing in the West Yorkshire records for a marriage so your only option is to buy that certificate. I only posted the 1857 record to show their status (as I mentioned).

Just trawling through various records to see if I can find a mention .....

MarieCeleste Report 7 Sep 2012 19:38

Is this connected?

Sheffield Independent - Saturday 7 July 1883.

SHEFFIELD BANKRUPTCY COURT
Re: Edwin Bygate - Mr J Binney applied on behalf of the trustees in liquidation of Edwin Bygate, schoolmaster of Brampton Commercial College, near Rotherham for a continnation of the liquidation, the debtor having recently died. His Honour granted the order.
