Elaine - you'd need to buy the birth certificates. You can order from GRO
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

The records will give the mother's maiden name so you could try looking for a marriage on FreeBMD between Carr and the mother's surname.

EDIT: Are these three girls sisters?

elained Report 29 Sep 2012 21:33

yes their sisters and acousin called nora was adopted into the same family.she was born in 1923 so it would be about 1932 when this happened

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 29 Sep 2012 21:37

Elaine - I'm struggling to find birth records for those three that all have the same mother's maiden name. Have you actually found their birth records.

Is Carr the name of the family that adopted them (either legally or otherwise) or is it the girls birth names?

Do you mean they were adopted in 1932? Seems odd, because Mary and Charlotte Muriel would be too old, I think, to be adopted.

no only nora would be adopted, the older 3 are carrs by birth

Elaine - why have you marked this as answered? We haven't got started yet!

Elaine - if you go to your first post there should be a little box that says something like "mark this as unanswered", click on that to remove the completed indicator.

As Andy says, I'm struggling to find births that match.

(I see what you mean - Nora was adopted into the family with the three sisters)

Charlotte M's death record confirms the birth year you gave:

England & Wales, Death Index: 1916-2006
Name: Charlotte Muriel Fenwick
Birth Date: 28 Nov 1916
Date of Registration: Dec 1995
Age at Death: 79
Registration district: Newcastle Upon Tyne
Inferred County: Tyne and Wear
Register Number: E58C
District and Subdistrict: 0531E
Entry number: 54

MarieCeleste Report 29 Sep 2012 22:14

There's this possible birth for Eleanor:

England & Wales, Birth Index: 1916-2005
Name: Eleanor Carr
Mother's Maiden Surname: Hansen
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1919
Registration district: Newcastle upon Tyne
Inferred County: Cumberland
Volume Number: 10b
Page Number: 337

but this is a possible too:

England & Wales, Birth Index: 1916-2005
Name: Eleanor Carr
Mother's Maiden Surname: Hobbs
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1919
Registration district: Castle Ward
Inferred County: Cumberland
Volume Number: 10b
Page Number: 559

Castle Ward can cover parts of Newcastle, particularly Gosforth, Seaton Burn - those sort of areas. Whereabouts in Newcastle did they live?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 29 Sep 2012 22:17

Hang on, looks like this could be Mary with mmn Hobbs - did she have a middle name?

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915
Name: Mary E Carr
Mother's Maiden Name: Hobbs
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1913
Registration district: Newcastle upon Tyne
Inferred County: Northumberland
Volume: 10b
Page: 188

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 29 Sep 2012 22:20

Yes! They must have been from Gosforth or other parts north Newcastle

England & Wales, Birth Index: 1916-2005
Name: Eleanor Carr
Mother's Maiden Surname: Hobbs
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1919
Registration district: Castle Ward
Inferred County: Cumberland
Volume Number: 10b
Page Number: 559

This is the nearest marriage I can find, not too far away in Durham:

Surname First name(s) Spouse District Vol Page
Marriages Mar 1913
Carr Arthur Hobbs Lanchester 10a 445
Hobbs Charlotte E Carr Lanchester 10a 445

Lanchester and Castle Ward were largely mining areas so it's a possible. Plus, Charlotte's name could have been passed down.

You really do need to get one of the girls birth certificates to check.

hi one mor thing as nora is adopted into the carr family is it possible her orignal name could be hobbs.trying to see which side of the family she orignally belonged to

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 29 Sep 2012 23:40

Hi Elaine - do come back on this thread and let us know what's on those certificates.

It's hard to say what Nora's birth name was - depends on which side of the family she was a cousin.

There is this birth but it might just be a complete coincidence:

Surname First name(s) Mother District Vol Page
Births Dec 1923
Hobbs Norah Pratt Lanchester 10a 575

Lanchester was where Arthur and Charlotte married ......

What else do you know about Nora?

elained

elained Report 29 Sep 2012 23:55

all i know about nora is she was a cousin of the three carr sisters and her mother died when she was about nine years old.dont know anything about her father.there was other brothers and sisters in the durham area.she married a robert(bob) morris but dont have a date, possibly somewhere in the 60,s.too.old for her to start a family. she lost touch with her orignal family so i only know her with the carr sisters. she died in shiney row,houghton-le-spring tyne and wear on 25th august 2008.bob died many years ago date not known in berwick hills, middlesborough
