Nothing on FMP for migration to NZ up to 1900. BUT.....their records don't start until 1890

Aren't there any immigration records for NZ?

Hi Reggie, Not all passengers lists were kept . The assisted ones or passengers in steerage you would be very lucky. I came across an ancestor of mine just by chance because she was on the debtors list. Was a stroke of luck. Thanks for looking for me. That looks promising Chris Thankyou.

Have you checked for any of his siblings in NZ?
It is possible that the whole family went to NZ.

Here are the births, but I wonder if there are 2 separate families or if there is an error on dates?
Look at the first two children named Julia and Mary.
There is only 6 months between them????

Hello All,

I found a passengerr list, the Otago arriving in Dunedin on the 6th June 1874. John 37, Johanna 30, Julia 9, James 6, Daniel 5, Patrick 4, Mary 2 and John 9 months. The dates of the deaths of Daniel and Patrick fit this family.

Any more on this family is most welcome.
with thanks,
Carol

Hi Ceedee,
Your passenger list appears to confirm that were will have been 2 separate sets of children born in Cork, both to parents called John Sullivan and Johanna Collins.

If your couple arrived in NZ in1874, they could not still be having children in Ireland in 1876 and 1878

Between 1902 and 1926 there are deaths for 3 women called Johanna Collins.
Sep 1926 age 72*** wife of Michael Sullivan. Not the correct death

6 Dec 1926 age 85. no death announcement found

23 Dec 1914 age 76 No death announcement found

Hi Ceedee,

The family moved around a bit. I live near Bromley cemetery. I will take the camera and have a look for them if you would like a photo that is.

Oamaru is a beautiful town and famous for its stone. Eden street rises sharply and if I knew the number I would take a photo of the house for you. Always nice to have a photo record!

Timaru and Temuka are within easy distance of each other. We need to find the family as they must be in the south island.

Will keep looking.

What luck on the information from Anne - Well done all round.

Sappho,
I have been looking at electoral rolls for the Sullivan family and due to my lack of NZ geography, I am finding it difficult to positively identify them, so I have kept my searches to Oamaru

I know that women are on Ers from about 1893 or 1896 onwards
EG 1900
I have found tthe Sullivans at Humber Street but only the males John ( labourer) and John Jnr ( farmer) are isted.
The women Johanna ( married) and unmarried Mary seem to be at Thames Street... unless I am mis identifying them?
They all appear on the same electoral roll page.

As the family seem to have arrived in NZ in 1874, Johanna ( Collins) would probably still be of childbearing age and I wondered if they had any NZ born children.

On the search, it became apparent that there had to be yet another couple called John And Johanna Sullivan as they were having children in a similar time period.

I have identified them as John Sullivan and Johanna Shanahan who married in Dec 1879.
In order to check for NZ births for your couple, I have looked at children born to a John and Johanna prior to Dec 1879.

I found three. ( no guarantee that these are your John's siblings but have parents with the correct names)
Margaret Sullivan b 1876
William Sullivan b 1877
Kate Ann Sullivan b 17 Apr 1879

Hi Anne,

FYI - the road from Dunedin to Christchurch goes Dunedin, Oamaru, Timaru, Temuka, onward, following the coast road. It looks to me that the family spread upwards towards Christchurch.

You are doing great things here Anne.

I did forget to mention that Fleur Sullivan is from Oamaru and is famous for her culinary skills.

Google Fleur Sullivan NZ! Sullivans' in the area - one living on Eden Street. Again using the Telecom NZ Residential Numbers using Oamaru, you will see them listed.

You two are amazing keep it up. Sappo I would love a photo if you can find anything at the cemetery. What a pity about the house number. I wondered if they still were having children Anne. I wonder what happened to Julia I saw on papers past that a young women Julia Sullivan died in Hokatika with a clot in her lung but her age didn't fit our Julia too young. My husbands father had a wedding photo of Johanna and John's son John Sullivan (they apparently called Jack) and then a family one with his wife Matty and daughter Mary amongst all his family photos, we found them after he had died so have no idea who they are. My husbands great grandmother was a Bridget Sullivan from Ireland and that is all the information we have nothing on her marriage cert. and only has a burial cert that I have found she born 1847 came to Naseby N.Z 1863? I have always wondered if there is somehow a connection.

Haven't they all left us a mystery to solve.

Thankyou Anne and Sappo I am anjoying all the info.
regards.

I too saw that death date for Jullia Sullivan ( from lung probs) but as you say, she was 21yrs old whilst yours would be 27 at the time of death

I am looking at the possibility that your Julia married Frederick Williams in 1895.
There are other possible marriages, but this is the only one that I have looked a so far, and I have established that Julia and Frederick Williams also lived in Otago.

I have said it before.... NZ geography is not my strong point!

I will to come back to this later... probably tomorrow
