Thanks Ceedee that is really helpful. I wonder if they will all be together?

Will go and have another look - I am not put off easily. I had my piece of paper, but no luck. Now we have a block number and in the week there will be someone there to help.
I had been looking for John and Kate Matilda. We will find them if they are there.

My neighbor was away for the weekend, but I know her mother is buried at Naseby - a recent one - Williams family plot and all the family have baches in Naseby.

Better go to bed.

Good night.

Hello Ceedee,

Just got back from Bromley. Not luck so far. It's very badly damaged from the quake, but I must say very tidy so I guess they have put time in there over the last two years.

I did a lot of walking up and down and it is a large place (have you been?) - I cannot believe there was not a Sullivan and I was also unsuccessful with Kate Matilda too. It is very spread out and so found it hard to know if I was getting 'warm' or not. Full of California poppies in bloom! Hopefully I will try again in the week, but if you have been on line and can get some indication of where is best to start. As I said, I did ring them and they had no luck.

I have a visitor staying from Thursday for a week so we shall see how it goes. Would have loved to have found them for you.

I have been sent the gravestone of my family from Moscow. Most of the cemeteries were destroyed in the Revolution, but these have survived and despite the dreadful experience they went through during the Stalin years, they are all there together; I am thrilled. For that reason I as especially keen to help others.

Best Wishes,

Sappho

Hi again Sappho,

In an earlier posting I was very excited in finding a passenger list I've put it below.

I found a passengerr list, the Otago arriving in Dunedin on the 6th June 1874. John 37, Johanna 30, Julia 9, James 6, Daniel 5, Patrick 4, Mary 2 and John 9 months. The dates of the deaths of Daniel and Patrick fit this family. Said they were from county Cork. So they came direct to N.Z. I have no idea where in New Zealand the rest of the family other than John Junior who married the police constables daughter went to. . Daniel and Patrick died young.
Oh these people got around. I just wish I could connect them as our relatives.

Thanks Sappho
talk later,
Carol

Just another thought on this.

Do you think there could be an Australian connection and they went there first say to W>A. and then came to NZ later.

Might need to check that out - passenger list to OZ

Hello again,

Just having a break from my searchings. I am sending to archives in Moscow, Odessa and the military section. Hope for some good news.

Well about George William Comyn - The Police Constable - he is in Dunedin - died age 53 - 26/03/1886 and Catherine on 15/02/1879. Shall go and visit Bromley over the weekend.

You know all about Naseby - had some great holidays there, but no Rabbit Pie!!

Love this family thing.

Hi again ceedee,

Just had a look for the family in Bromley. Sorry not there that we can see on the database. However, I am going to give you a link to our Libraries that do searches and you can contact them yourself. This way you can answer the questions put to me today that I just do not have the answers to.

[email protected]

They will cover the cemeteries from Dunedin to Christchurch for your family. Once they have given you a plot or grave number and at which cemetery. They may not be on the data base, but we will start with that.

Good luck,

Sappho

Sappo,

The John Sullivan we have been studying I have been hoping is another connection to Bridget Sullivan maybe a nephew. . If I could only find her on a passeger list. I was told one she was a companion on board with a Mary Moran who came to Naseby. Apparently there was a group of young woman arrived in Naseby at the same time.

Hi Sappho,
I was browsing the Naseby cemetery yesterday and there were wee rabbits running from everywhere. Bridget married a James Spedderi from Malta they had 6 children with only four living. He was a gold miner their first baby died on the hogburn gold mine. He bought the Kyeburn Hotel in Leven street Naseby and they had a son Lawrence. He sold the hotel in around 1868 to a Mr George Chapman. They then moved to a huge gorge on Rough Ridge a place he named Garibaldi in the area of Gimmerburn. They had Mary, Rosina, Helen Bridget and another lIttle Joseph who died. Bridget died in 1882 aged 35 at Garibaldi she buried is buried in the Naseby cemetery. James lived untill he was 78 and buried with her in Naseby. I hope your neighbour can throw some light on our mystery. There was a Bernard Sullivan who was the pound keeper for 24 years he married Catherind Downes (here mother was a Mungovan) I have alwasys wondered if he had a connection to our Bridget.
Naseby is a pretty, quiet little town with an international indoor curling rink it brings hundreds of visitors,
Thanks a lot.

Ceedee,

Can we just go over the part about the burial in Naseby.

Quote: My husbands great grandmother was a Bridget Sullivan from Ireland and that is all the information we have nothing on her marriage cert. and only has a burial cert that I have found she born 1847 came to Naseby N.Z 1863? I have always wondered if there is somehow a connection.

Only my neighbour was a Williams before her marriage and has a huge connection to Naseby. Could I ask you to confirm Bridget Sullivan's connection to Naseby - did she die there? Did she just live there for a time - its an interesting place - full of rabbits!!!

I too saw that death date for Jullia Sullivan ( from lung probs) but as you say, she was 21yrs old whilst yours would be 27 at the time of death

I am looking at the possibility that your Julia married Frederick Williams in 1895.
There are other possible marriages, but this is the only one that I have looked a so far, and I have established that Julia and Frederick Williams also lived in Otago.

I have said it before.... NZ geography is not my strong point!

I will to come back to this later... probably tomorrow

You two are amazing keep it up. Sappo I would love a photo if you can find anything at the cemetery. What a pity about the house number. I wondered if they still were having children Anne. I wonder what happened to Julia I saw on papers past that a young women Julia Sullivan died in Hokatika with a clot in her lung but her age didn't fit our Julia too young. My husbands father had a wedding photo of Johanna and John's son John Sullivan (they apparently called Jack) and then a family one with his wife Matty and daughter Mary amongst all his family photos, we found them after he had died so have no idea who they are. My husbands great grandmother was a Bridget Sullivan from Ireland and that is all the information we have nothing on her marriage cert. and only has a burial cert that I have found she born 1847 came to Naseby N.Z 1863? I have always wondered if there is somehow a connection.

Haven't they all left us a mystery to solve.

Thankyou Anne and Sappo I am anjoying all the info.
regards.

I did forget to mention that Fleur Sullivan is from Oamaru and is famous for her culinary skills.

Google Fleur Sullivan NZ! Sullivans' in the area - one living on Eden Street. Again using the Telecom NZ Residential Numbers using Oamaru, you will see them listed.

Hi Anne,

FYI - the road from Dunedin to Christchurch goes Dunedin, Oamaru, Timaru, Temuka, onward, following the coast road. It looks to me that the family spread upwards towards Christchurch.

You are doing great things here Anne.
