I'm thinking that "if" the parents weren't married then maybe a story was made to cover the fact? Remember illegitimacy was something to be covered up back then if at all possible.

Think the only way you'll know is to order the birth and marriage certificate for Thomas Jnr.


In 1920 Annie Goldsmith was living at 21 West End Road, with James. Still at the same address in 1927, but at 21a West End Road is Thomas and Lily Goldsmith.

The last one is very likely, from what I've been told 'Ryan' is the family name, but when they came over from Ireland they couldn't get any work, so they tacked 'Goldsmith' onto it to sound less Irish! I also wouldn't be surprised if he father was called Thomas!

OK, it states that Annie is a widow and had 3 children and 3 children are still living. Doesn't state when she married or complete years of marriage!!!

It looks like there were 3 daughters born to him, Margaret, Patricia and Iris.

I've had a good luck on the other site and I just can't see him with his brother James on any census.. at the mo that is the only way to link them to find possible parents.

I think he was born around 1889, I've found a few newspaper articles from 1941 that say he is 52.

Thank you, last one is definitely him, the others could be, the date I've been given for his birth is 1905 but he seems to have had a kid in 1921 so I wouldn't be surprised if he was born earlier. Where was it you found this?

I've found a Thomas G Ryan who died in Barnstaple in 1946, I think that's him as he lived at least part of his life in North Devon. I still don't know how to find his parents though!
