Looking at the parish register, it is the right child - father was a gun maker which fits with later census.

The family were on 1871 census, (Joseph was 45, so a considerable variation in ages) but can't find them in 1891 but think father Joseph died in 1888. Annie was with Benjamin Read by 1901 and recorded as married, but then he was a widow in 1911 still living with step-daughter Lily (now Lamb)

According to one of the children's marriages Joseph Crabtree was deceased by Dec 1888, and there is a corresponding death in 1888 although again the age is out.

REALLY!

Also, oldest child from the 1881 census was born London - think this may be him

Looking at the census, I don't think the signature is the same as on his military record. I know it's rather strange, but maybe Rose had it in her head his middle name was Charles and she completed the census? The only time he has been recorded as William Charles is the marriage and 1911 census - the birth & death are for William Henry.

Dea

Dea Report 11 Nov 2012 09:39

Can Rose Ellen's birth date be confirmed by your info ?

Do you know who she married or when or where she died?

Laura Report 11 Nov 2012 09:32

on my ancestry tree i have a 1911 cencus of william.

its says william charles crabtree and in 1911 he was 30 yrs old so would make his birth 1881 however i have 1878 and that he was born 12th aug. maybe that was a give or take date?? william was a mill carter.

Flip Report 11 Nov 2012 09:27

So, in view of the military record I would think the 1881 census posted earlier (which I discounted due to the birth reg) is probably the right one.

Dea

Dea Report 11 Nov 2012 09:25

Why did you think his middle name was Charles and where did you get the date of birth from please?

Dea, it must be the right one, according to the record they married 18/11/1902 at Reading registry office.

Flip

Flip Report 11 Nov 2012 09:04

In the military file, his wife is named as Rose (Gee) and he has daughter Rose Ellen dob 6/8/1909, and another child William Henry dob 21/2/1912 but he is crossed out - died 8/11/1914 - there is also that child's death cert on the record.

Must be the right one, so no idea where the middle name Charles came from??

Dea

Dea Report 11 Nov 2012 08:56

I have just been looking at that death cert and those records too Flip - they do seem to be the one we are looking for ??

ALSO - Laura said he died in Wallingford and this is the only death | can come up with, which also fits 'that' William Henry !!!

For some reason this death cert is attached to the military record for William Henry Crabtree - I'm just ploughing through the 42 pages to see if it is connected. William Henry, born Birmingham 1881 according to enlistment.
