A little more to the Feb 5th notes. The sojourn into the world of Family History took a trip down the Jennings path being the female side of our marriage. The end stretches a wee bit further although into the 1500s. The term , "Ad infinitum ", could be applied. Very interesting but shrouded in the fog of probable possibility. Another point there is no Census Return dated 1500. Civil Authorities were not quite as organised as those of later years. Now to return to the notes, reference books, B.D & M of the pastime etc., etc.. Hope everyone enjoys digging & delving. Happy hunting. Cyril.

Hello folks! Here again after a rather long time. Year 2015 previous occasion and now 2018. Well was informed you could come back to the pastime from the word "Go". Gathered much information over the years. Have created a special ring binder named it, "Lopez". A 1st cousin 2x removed , from Worksop Notts., born 1862 settled over there. Married, raised a family and prospered. Lopez Island Historical Society provided a photo of his house, plus I have obtained a photo of the boat two of his sons built Originally named Idaho renamed Owl as in the photo .All very interesting. Idaho chosen being the favourite state they passed through on the way to Lopez en route from Minnesota. Before closing another name Rhodes is in the family. Wilf the Yorkshire & England cricketer was employed at Mirfield Loco Sheds before becoming a professional cricketer. Many years later
I was employed as a freight guard there The long arm of coincidence. I do not play cricket. Enjoy gardening and now in my 91st year - 1926 vintage.

This comment is not in any way a reply. Posted as a classical example of coincidence , or pure luck in choosing Norfolk for a spot of relaxation for one week
earlier this year in one of those holiday cottages which abound in that county.
We chose Holt as the place to visit. Neither of us had been there previously. So taken up with it we have booked another week there.
The coincidence being the presence of family with identical surname born there in the 1830s & on present day Electoral Rolls.
A trip on the North Norfolk Railway - (The Poppy Line} a change of train necessary at Sheringham meant waiting on the platform for a while. The signal box stands on the platform. The signalman was standing in the signal box doorway who insisted he knew me as a signalman. I have never been a signalman on any railway, but started in a signal box in Yorkshire as a Junior Porter Train Recorder in 1940 retiring in 1988 as Guard in Yorkshire. By the way the individual born in Holt named
Corby Cransfield Towell was a tailor by trade - no relationship established.

Responding to, +++DetEcTive+++, Reggie, Susan, Lady Kira and Chris Ho:) Please accept my very grateful thanks for all your comments. All have proved useful in many ways. The suggestions and pointers to other methods genealogical
have been followed with some gratifying results too numerous to place in this short space. New ground covered with the pointers to other websites etc., has drawn my attention to the much sought pre 1837 records in Lincolnshire. IE pre 1750.
I can now eliminate some of the data collected. Bear in mind much has been collected over a 20 year period. Had a sojourn today in the Lincolnshire data.
Rutland County next one to tackle. Impossible to tackle the available info in one
afternoon. The garden & greenhouse require attention but in traditional English
fashion this P.M. "Rain stopped play" while indoor commitments stopped research.

Hello Reggie, Thanks for your response. I have tried County Archives in many places up and down England. They certainly are worth a visit. Where ever we, the wife & myself often have had trips out to these Archives, have found the staff very helpful. Lewes, Chichester, Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Nottingham, Derby just to mention a few. Started the hobby in 1988 and still probing. The need for the widespread archive search arises from our own origins Sussex and Yorkshire.
Both sides of the family being researched. Just noticed a missing family name in the researching list. Rhodes from Huddersfield. Wilf Rhodes England and Yorkshire Professional Cricketer is related. Have quite a collection with that research.

Thanks for your response to my thread. Yes, I have thought about Memorial Inscriptions. Have been to a local churchyard to view such. Identical surname but alas no evidence of any connections. Nil Desperandum. Searched through Wills & Testaments at numerous depositories. Wills make interesting reading especially the naming of beneficiaries. Many relations are found through that process.
Translating from old style English often a mixture of Latin, French and local old English is very interesting. Makes you realise people spoke a different language than we do today. Another source of information, by the way, referred to as "Examination" of a named person where a person moved from one place to another, just to ascertain whether they would not become a liability or not at their new abode. Parochial conservation of available funds uppermost in the minds of the examiners should a person become a liability or send them back from whence they came. These "Examinations" are often a mine of information. Regards .Cyril :-)

Very many thanks for your response. The names I seek at the moment are those with the surname Towell living in Lincolnshire 1750 and earlier. Particularly any who resided in Butterwick, Boston and surrounding area or around Wrangle.
I have a fairly lengthy collection of the Nottinghamshire families. I have traced the
movement of family connections from Lincolnshire into Nottinghamshire then into
Yorkshire - county of my birth - 1926 vintage and still searching. Commenced the hobby in the late 1980s after retiring. Enjoyed every second. Kind regards. Cyril :-) :-)

People tend to forget that PR can be lost or become illegible over the years. Possibly the same can apply to any Willls left..........and only those with something to leave wrote a Will!

Try the County Records Office, if you haven't already done so

Have traced family to 1750 Holland area, Lincolnshire. Need to find the origins of the traced members. Information seems to be scarce. Have found wills & testaments dated 1650 which creates a 100 years gap. No name change verified.
Same spelling in those distant days as present days. I look upon the so termed variations as different families. I am aware of a deliberate name change being recorded within those variations. The surname in 1650 and in 2013 is Towell.
Those variations, Towl, Towle, Towel, can be found in Bardney which leads to the
conclusion four different families existed in Bardney. Incidentally do not readily accept the I.G.I. index as being correct. "Caldervale"
