Again, notes from a tree

If true, might explain a few things ! ...........

Thomas Poole (1887-1918) was a driver in the Royal Field Artillery during The Great War (1914-18) he probably was drafted in 1916. Served in France. He was supposed to be a nasty character, a womaniser, a drunk and a wife beater. He met his death in bizarre circumstances. He was returning from a night out in a local village in France the worse for wear, The sentry on duty at the Army Camp, seeing a dark figure shouted 'Who goes there, friend or foe?', Thomas shouted back in a comic German accent 'FOE' and was shot dead. Alice found out about his death when she collapsed in a shop in Eastbourne from lack of food, and the lady who helped her said that her husband was the sentry who had accidentally shot Thomas. Alice was apparently very grateful to the Sentry for freeing her from the no good tyrant.

How sad, whatever his character, to be killed so near the end of the war. Sometimes people enlisted in areas other than a home address.

If this is he, from ancestry:

Yes it is sad Joy but sometimes it's for the best, esp as he died of his own stupidity! I'm fairly sure it's the right one just can't find any of them on the 1911 anywhere????? have tried looking for alice under beeney and andrews with no luck or the boys? she had twins in 1910 and 1 died so maybe that tipped her over the edge?
would be good to find some of them in 1911!
thanks everyone for the help! what an interesting evening!
