Oh that's such a shame. :-( I'm sure I've seen a website for Dromore church, will look it up and see if there is an e-mail addy I can contact someone and ask.

Thanks for your help!

Drumballyroney & Dromore C.O.I church records are not online,
http://www.rootsireland.ie/ifhf/generic.php?filename=sources.tpl&selectedMenu=sources

There could be 2 reason for this
1/ They are still in the hands of the churches, and have not yet been transcribed, or the churches have refused premission to copy them.
Or
2/ They where destroyed in Dublin in 1922, 70% of C.O.I. records where destroyed up to 1870, some churches duplicated their records before sending them to Dublin.

Hi,

Thanks for the tip re Baptist records. The marriage cert gives James address as Drumballyroney. His wifes address is given as Dromore. It's the Fisher line my father-in-law wants to follow for the time being. They married at Dromore Church.

I have been looking specifically for birth certs til now so will see what I can find with regards to Baptist records.

As a side note, the witnesses were Alexander Walker and Jane Walker. I figured they were probably related to one of the betrothed so had a look for a wedding record which showed Jane to have the maiden name of Fisher. I'm thinking she's more than likely James sister so have ordered that cert to find out and see if there is any further info on that that might help. Gotta be worth a try!

Thanks for getting back to me.

Registration didn't began until 1864 in Ireland and non catholic mariages 1845, so your not going to get his birth cert. You will have to try and find out where in Co. Down he was born, to try and find a baptism record. Where did they marry, and does the cert give their addresses?

I've hit a brick wall again with this. I am now trying to locate the birth certificate for James Fisher, DOB 1858c in County Down. I have his wedding cert here (wife is Eliza Anne Robinson as was suggested earlier in the thread). The wedding cert says he's 'of full age', and gives his father as Thomas Fisher, a Watchman. He was married in 1883. His DOB has been estimated from the 1901 and 1911 censuses so I am mindful that might not be accurate.

I'm hoping a fresh pair of eyes might be able to find something I can't....If anyone has time to spare. I'm going round in circles with this! Thanks in advance!

My father-in-law found out from his brother today that William WAS infact in the navy. He had no idea until today. So now I know, I can hopefully continue to trace the Fisher line. :-D

Thank you for your all your help! Will wait to see what info my father-in-law can get from his aunt, then take it from there.

If it is the right birth you found on rootsireland.ie then its more than likely his mother a Eliza Anne Robinson

Oh the Will post must have crossed with mine...I left the pc to make a phone call. That's brilliant, thank you. My father-in-law just informed me that one of Williams daughters is still alive (not the same Aunt I mentioned in my last post). He and his brother are popping over to speak to her as I type and I've told him to ask her specifically about the Navy. :-D

That's brilliant, thank you. I'll speak to my father-in-law and see if he can speak with his aunt and ask her about him being in the Navy. Maybe it will jog her memory.

The William Thomas in the 1911 English census who in the Navy, gives Banbridge Co Down as his place of birth, this would fit with the birth your found for a Thomas William.

One of his daughter-in-laws is still alive and apparently has some old photos....I think the best I can hope for is that there is one of him in either an Army or Navy uniform! She's making copies for my father-in-law (Williams grandson) this week.

The William from Co. Cavan in the army in 1911, Royal Munster Fusilliers

Re 1911 Census: I have found a William 'Misc locations, Royal Navy' but have no idea if it's him or even if he was in the Navy.

Maura

Maura Report 17 May 2013 14:24

Have you found william on the 1911 census?

Michelle

Michelle Report 17 May 2013 14:23

I also know that they definitely were able to read and write as William was very into calligraphy from a young age. Feel like I might be getting somewhere now! Thanks for your help, both of you!

Michelle

Ok, so the birth I posted first I would say is NOT the one I am after. Both William and his father were definitely railway workers/station masters which is how William ended up in Ammanford (where he died).

1901 & 1911 are the only complete census for Ireland that survived.
