There is this family in 1841 living in Kirriemuir and daughter Lydia seems to have named a child Margaret Nicol, so possibly this is Ann's family. I can also find an Ann living in Perthshire with a Nicol family:

The 1871 census posted by RootsGatherer is the only one I can find, too, for an Alexander and Ann(ie) Mcdonald in Liverpool. But the ages are way out, especially Annie's. And Alexander's a seaman in that record.
I don't think that's them.

This is definitely them in 1861, and he's a grocer:

The Ann MacDonald in the 1851 above is the one whose father is given as Charles Spalding.
Her place of birth listed there is the same as the place of death of her brother John Spalding.

But I think we now think she's the wrong Ann Spalding, and that the one with parents John and Margaret in Kirriemuir is the correct one.
Do we?? I'm confused.

If she's John & Margaret's daughter, then her birth was 1812 (per AnnCardiff's post on page 1).
But if so, there are no census records for her in 1841 as far as I can see.

Potty

Potty Report 5 Aug 2013 14:57

I cannot find any baptisms for John Spalding and Margaret Nichol's children, except the 1812 for Ann that AnnCardiff posted.

Also puzzled by Alexander's change of POB - in 1871 it is Scotland, in 1861 and the (wrong?) 1851 I posted it is Ireland. Also, his occupation changes:1861 - Grocer; 1871 - Traveller in Publications. Are there two Alexanders married to Anns?

The age difference for Alexander between 1861 and 1871 is 20 years.

Edit:checking the image for 1871, Alexander's age is 45 not 55, so agrees with the 1861.

I wonder what Alexander's parents' names were? Maybe they followed the Scottish naming pattern?

Charles

Charles Report 5 Aug 2013 15:14

I am still confused!!!!
Alexander Proudfoot McDonald was definitely born in Ireland in 1826 (father was in the army).
It is possible that there are two Alexanders.
We think that Ann 1812 is too early as the 1851 census for Alexander is correct as it tallies with the Birth of my Gt. grandfather and Ann's date appears to be correct. Many thanks for your efforts.
Peter.

This Alexander and Ann would fit with the OPR which has Alexander as a Draper. I have had a look at the OPR marriage entry. I'm not convinced the father is "Jo" Spalding. There are several other J's on the same page whose lower loops fall on or just below the line, whereas this lower loop is quite long. Further down the page a Robert Hunter marries a Sarah Hughes dau of ? Hughes. I could go for the first letter of that being the same as Ann's father's BUT quite what it is I don't know!

I think it's still a J in spite of being different from others - but don't know why that should be! Something to do with it being at the start of an abbreviation??

It's certainly not C.

There's also Janet Fyffe's father at the bottom of the image.

Charles

Charles Report 5 Aug 2013 22:51

The 1851 census transcription detailed above is definitely the correct one.
This shows wife Ann as being born in "Ashly cottage" the home of Charles Spalding and his wife Christian.
The entry of the fathers name on the OPR has always been a mystery which hopefully can be resolved.
I do think we could be on the right lines with the "Ashly Cottage" family.(see Stuart /Ann/and Argyll entries)
Please keep trying help.
Peter.

Potty

Potty Report 6 Aug 2013 14:29

Just some thoughts:

Ann's father on the marriage looks like "Jo"; there is a baptism for an Ann with father John and mother Margaret Nichol.

This baptism is a bit early for the ages given on later censuses. If this is the Ann who married Alexander, then either she lied about her age later, or possibly this Ann died and a later child was given the same name.

There are no records of baptisms in the OPR for any of the other children of John and Margaret - perhaps they were members of a different Church.

Ann's POB - possibly Charles and John were brothers.

Have you found Charles and Christian on any census?

Potty

Potty Report 6 Aug 2013 14:46

Just to confuse matters further, Charles was born Kirkmichael, Perthshire (1851 Census, which has his occupation as Farmer, Chelsea Pensioner) which is where an Ann Spalding is in 1841 with 3 Nichol children - the eldest Christian, is described as "Ind" - an odd "occupation" for a 14 year old:

Civil Parish:Kirkmichael
County:Perthshire
Address:Merkland House
Occupation:Ind

All not born in County:

Christian Nicol 14
George Nicol 12
James Nicol 10
Louisa Ogilyie 20
Ann Spalding 20
