Re John Spalding who married Margaret Nicol, there are these possible births. The 1798 one looks most likely:

27/07/1793 SPALDING JOHN WILLIAM SPALDING/CHRISTIAN GALLOWAY M BLAIRGOWRIE /PERTH 335/00 0010 0208

>>>>>>
17/02/1798 SPALDING JOHN CHARLES SPALDING/EUPHAN LYON M KIRKMICHAEL (PERTH) /PERTH 370/00 0020 0187

25/03/1798 SPALDING JOHN WILLIAM SPALDING/ELISABETH WATSON FR715 (FR715) M TEALING /ANGUS 322/00 0030 0107

AG, on all the censuses John's POB is given as Angus, Kirriemuir. He died 1874 aged 84; widower of Margaret Nicol; father:William Spalding; mother: Margaret Lindsay.

So, it doesn't look as if he is related to Charles.

Possible for his baptism:

Name: Spalding
Gender: Male
Christening Date: 27 Dec 1791
Christening Place: KIRRIEMUIR,ANGUS,SCOTLAND
Birth Date:
Birthplace:
Death Date:
Name Note:
Race:
Father's Name: William Spalding
Father's Birthplace:
Father's Age:
Mother's Name: Margt. Lindsay
Mother's Birthplace:
Mother's Age:
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C11299-2
System Origin: Scotland-ODM

It is looking more and more as if Ann is the daughter of Charles!

Maybe he went by his second name and only used Charles for official documents!

Thank you all for your input, it is a lot to digest, which I am trying to do at the moment.
Plenty to work on will report any conclusions.
Peter.

Correct me if I am wrong, this is how I see it at this time.
Ann Spalding is mentioned in the 1851 census for Dundee as having been born in Ashly Cottage. Married to Alexander Mcdonald who was born in Ireland ( This is correct as his father born 1800 in Blaigowrie was in the Army ).
Ann Spalding is not mentioned in the " 1841 " census as living in Ashly Cottage with her family, but there is mention of an Ann Spalding aged 20 years, living with a Nichol family as stated in previous threads.
Could this be the Ann Spalding missing from 1841 census for Ashley Cottage?
And also the future wife of Alexander Mcdonald?
Peter.

Impossible to prove, but she certainly could be. The age is right-ish.
She's listed as a Farm Servant in 1841, so probably isn't related to the Nicol family of Merkland House, Kirkmichael.

I have just come across this thread.
I have many records, especially census and immigration where a man's name is entered as Jo.
It is an abbreviation for: John.
Often abbreviated to Jno
