Maybe Ann Eckersley had a fling with her brother-in-law???
Which would account for the child living with Ann - and William.

(Good night, Mike - I've been staring at this screen for far too long!)

Going off son Elijah's birth, the mother's maiden name was BURY

Co-incidence that William married Ann BERRY sometimes transcribed as BURY !!!

Re James's first wife, plenty of candidates. Does Lancs BMD give his first marriage?

Pity! That was an appealing theory about Elijah!

What about James, Joseph and Oliver, also registered in Jun qr 1841?
Well, not Oliver - no sign of him having died before 1851 census.
But could be James or Joseph?

Interesting - biblical names seem to have been popular with Bolton Eckersleys.
Elijah, Isaac, Israel, Emanuel, Martha, Rachel, not to mention more common John, James, Peter, Joseph, Sarah.

Maybe significant.

Was James, William's brother ?
and did his first wife die in childbirth ?

Off the wall theory so bear with me.

Child is 3 days old so probably not yet registered.
What if they changed their minds about his name??

The Eckersley daughters were all too young to have had a child in 1841, so if he was illegitimate he could have been a nephew, or else the son of a neice.

Birth cert would give mother's first name, and allow further search.

Mike *

Mike * Report 16 Aug 2013 00:28

Trouble is the boy Eckersley was born to a mother maiden name Eckersley so most likely unmarried.

Have found all the other births on Lancsbmd ( mother maiden name BERRY/BURY) so it's strange there is no entry for Abram.

I'd also say that he was William and Ann's child. On the 1851 census there is a gap between the births of Timothy and Martha (when Abram was probably born and died).

I think the birth and death that Mike found look very promising.

Thank you Mike & ArgyllGran. Shame the 1841 didn't record relationships. It looked as though he was William & Ann's child. If he wasn't, then he was very young, at 3 days old, to be away from his mother.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 15 Aug 2013 18:22

Yes, Christina, Abram's name is correct.

Just for interest -
the 1841 has lots of mistakes in Ancestry's transcription!
Timothy, Mary, & John have been missed out, and it says Abram's 3 months old, when the image clearly says 3 days.

Found possible deaths for Mary & Timothy aged 76 & 84 respectively.

I see there is a large age gap between Timothy's grandchildren Timothy b 1837 & Martha b 1846.

Please will you see if you can find the family on the 1841 census to see if there were any other children?

Thank you George. Both still living, that's a bonus. Off to look for possible deaths now. :-)
