xtootsy16x Report 16 Oct 2013 22:54

just been speaking to my mum, she said Albert died the following year of his wife of Cancer of the throat and tongue!!!, Louisa was working at the Duke of Edinburgh as a barmaid for Henry Tyson ( he owned the pub) , and when she was married to John Glover, not long after they lost their son ,John left the family home, and never returned to her, so if he returned 7years and 1 day, he would have been declared dead, so maybe that's why things are slightly difficult to find out !! Thanks for your researching You are Brilliant !!!! P.S. apparently William Jeffries married a Hilda ?will try to find out.. then divorced, then went to America and married an American , then divorced and came back in 1954 ,where he married again Mary . Mary was a nurse, she met Albert when she was nursing him and had an affair .She inherited Alberts money, coz Sarah was dead then married William (HARRY) not sure of year ! he emigrated back to America with Mary until he died in1975 ..and then she inherited everything else !!! what a family !!!!

If you go to freebmd, you'll find Thomas's marriage to Maria Woodall was in Rochdale in 1898.

Sarah Jeffries was 79 when she died in 1948, so considerably older that Albert - no wonder she didn't give her age on the marriage certificate.

Flip Report 16 Oct 2013 17:45

It was Albert Edward to Sarah Channing that married in 1915 - given above.
Sarah A I Jeffries died in 1948, are you saying a 60 year old Albert is having an affair with his brother wife? When will they ever learn!

ADDED - it must have proved too much for him, he died the following year!!

The only marriage on cumbriabmd for Thomas Jeffries is in 1926 to Sarah Burridge at St James. But this isn't one I checked out in the parish records as I thought it was rather late, obviously this was probably his second marriage. The first marriage must have been outside of Barrow - you could check it out on freebmd.

Nothing coming up for William Jeffries on cumbriabmd, so again you may need to check that out on freebmd.

xtootsy16x Report 16 Oct 2013 14:52

Hi Flip , many thanks for all this information , it has helped me tremendously, my mum remembers Sarah Channing committing suicide by putting her head in the oven, because Albert (the youngest of Thomas & Matilda Jeffries) was having an affair with his brother William 's girlfriend or wife.!!!!! On the wall of the Majestic just inside main door, the original papers are on the wall in a glass case. I wonder if you Know any distant relatives up in Barrow.....rather spooky.... but very many thanks for everything, I can know let my mother know about all her aunts & uncles x Brilliant FLIP :-D :-D

You're welcome, it handy being local!

So your great grandmother, still single, was one of the witnesses to Louisa's marriage.

Two brothers got married on the same day 4 June 1900 at St Matthew's church both giving their father as Thomas, blacksmith:

John James Walter Jeffries, 23, Traveller of 12 Cheltenham street,
Ethel Elizabeth Taylor, 21, of same address, father John Taylor (herbalist, I think)
Witnesses Thomas Jeffries, Maud Jeffries and May Couper

Joseph Frederick Jeffries, 22, Blacksmith of 12 Cheltenham street
Mary Shields, 21, of 7f Blake street, father William Shields, labourer
Witnesses John Shields, James Shields, Florrie Tomlin & Mary Smith

The other brother married 22 March 1915 at St Marks church, his father named as Thomas, blacksmith:

Albert Edward Jeffries, 35 (bachelor) Hammerman, of 68 Cheltenham street
Sarah Annie Isabella Channing "full age" - but no age given, widow of 66 Nelson street, father Joseph Swinerton, shipwright.
Witnesses Lily May Nettleton & Harold Sharpe

Many years ago I used to frequent the Majestic, there was a good disco held there at weekends - nothing to do with the drink they sold. It's still there, but don't think it has the disco these days.

Marriage St James Barrow, 9 July 1891:
Louisa Jane Jeffries, 21 spinster of 30 Cheltenham Street, father Thomas Jeffries, blacksmith
John Percy Stead Glover, 23, bachelor, commercial traveller of 74 Blake Street, (opposite St James church) father James Glover, clerk.
Witnesses Ann Elizabeth Jeffries and Elijah Louis or Jones (not clear) and John Raylould (again not clear)

Marriage 24 May 1916, St Pauls, Barrow
Louisa Jane Glover, 46, widow of 68 Cheltenham street, father Thomas Jeffries, blacksmith & contractor
Henry Tyson, 61, widower, of 3 Windsor Street, father James Tyson, farmer & brewer.
Witnesses Louie Phillips and Walter Jeffries Oliver

I can't see a divorce for Louisa, nor a death other than that already posted for JPS Glover. Wonder if there were 2 cases of bigamy, he re-married as a bachelor and her as a widow! That is, unless he was killed in WW1 - I haven't checked that out.

She did not marry under both Glover and Jeffries, I spoke to one of the assistants in the RO - if there is a different father's name on the marriage cert it is transcribed under both on the Cumbriabmd site.

I've also got the full marriage details for 3 of her brothers, but not sure if you are interested in them or not - let me know.

Flip Report 8 Oct 2013 21:03

I'll check out both marriages and those of her siblings (in parishes registers in Barrow, as reg office/non conformist are not available & I think you were looking for her sister under another thread, but she married outside parish registers) to see what I can find, but it will be tomorrow evening. Will post up what I can find either tomorrow night or Thursday morning.

Which of her siblings is your direct ancestor - just so as I know where to focus the hour I'll have when I get back here tomorrow? Unfortunately the RO was flooded last weekend hence the closure and I can only get there on Wednesday evenings when it isn't open weekends or Mondays. However, I'm working from home Thursday, so could spare an hour then to check anything else out. But you need to be specific on what you want looking up as I have limited time. If you want any of your other local rellies checked out go onto cumbriabmd and give me the parish & year of their marriage & I'll check them out.

I'll check for replies Thursday morning but after that I'll not have access to this site or able to check parish records for a couple of weeks.

atb, Flip

How did you arrive at John Percy? Were you tracking him & his family, or Louisa's family?

I can't find a death for Louisa, before the possible re-marriage for him in 1897 nor can I see her on any subsequent census under the name Glover.

Flip Report 6 Oct 2013 08:01

Cumbriabmd is useful as they have transcribed mmn and for marriages the parish, but it only covers Barrow & Millom areas - so does not extend to Ulverston as it is a different reg district.

The records office has all the parish records on film, and you can view the full marriage certificate so long as it wasn't registry office or non conformist. It's closed tomorrow, and the next day I have is Wednesday so I'll take a look and get the details.

The birth posted for Charles is the only one showing for the couple in Barrow.

The death of their child I would think:

Deaths Jun 1893 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Glover Charles Albert 1 Ulverston 8e 559

His birth was registered as Charles Albert C Glover as previously posted, registered in Barrow. Ulverston is about 8 miles away.

They didn't have any more children in Barrow, but there is no death showing for the son or Louisa in the Barrow records - so I would assume they moved away.

I'm local, so if you don't have their marriage cert I can check out the parish records for the details if you want. May confirm if his fathers name is the same as that given when he married Ellen Heaney

Incidently, the S stands for Stead - google his full name, there are newspaper articles about his business.

Added: when he married Ellen Heaney he stated he was a bachelor.
