Good Evening

I have just seen a posting regarding Crew Lists and I was wondering if someone would be able to help me please.

On my gg grandmother's Death Cert (Sept 1890) it says her husband WCS is a Steward on a Royal Mail Steamship. The death was reported by their son, so William must have been at sea when she died. They were living in Woolwich at the time.

I did a double take when I got the certificate as WCS was in the army in India for many years!

Thanks

On the post that Gins replied to she said there were Crew Lists on Ancestry. I have no idea if you have to search on the name of the ship or the name of the crew member. Knowing my luck it will be the former!

Hello Chris, I see from his army records that he was also known as William Dady. Do you know when he was using his various names?

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 26 Oct 2013 20:34

He died in 1900 ,maybe the army record is his son William

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 26 Oct 2013 21:04

Shirley, no - the army record is most definitely his because his son wasn't born in 1844! I wouldn't have been looking at e.g. WW1 records for someone who would have been around 70 at that time.

It looks as though he enlisted in one regiment in 1859 as William Dady and then another in 1863 as William Champion Smeed. The records on FindMyPast include both attestation papers and comments written on them by the regiment.

Had a busy weekend and have come back to see all this!

I do have a lot of info on WCS and he was quite a colourful character! He deserted from his first regiment which he joined at 15yrs as a Boy Trumpeter. He then re-enlisted into another regiment using his brother-in-laws surname of Dady. Off he went to India where he married and had to call his first son Dady for obvious reasons. He was eventually found out and sent back to England to be dealt with. They stopped his pension for the time he was AWOL from his first regiment. He was 'busted' several times for being drunk & disorderly and getting into fights, but he finally retired from the army as a Drum Sgt Major. The son you mentioned above (William Dady Smeed) was a Stoker with the Royal Navy. Sadly he was asphixiated when some idiot took a stove into the double hull of the ship where he was painting.

Thanks for your continued interest.

New request please!

Would someone be able to carry out an address check in the 1901 Census please?

The address is 24 Adamson Road Custom House

(Which is part of West Ham).

I am looking for an M. A. Smeed (age unknown).
Female/Widow.

Many Thanks

MarieCeleste

Hi Christine, not seeing either a no 24 or a Custom House on Adamson Road in 1901.

If you could let us know where these details came from can try other ways of finding. Are you trying to establish who M A Smeed was?
